Print it out and share with all your co-workers, friends and family to make sure to remember WHY we celebrate this holiday. Read it, know it, and pass it to all to make sure to remember WHY.

Wikipedia is pretty decent as well.

The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.

Independence Day was a good movie. Not sure we need an entire day devoted to it though.

So, would we have gained indepedence eventually without going to war, or did our independence pave the way for peaceful independence of the other British territories? OTOH, the track record for peaceful independence in the Americas in general is quite poor.

See the Declaration of Independence.

And yes it did.

Decentralized American militia showed the brutal British Army that the inalienable right of secession was not to be messed to with. Unfortunately, that didn't deter Lincoln.

Without the French army and Navy we might still be under a British flag.
Since we had Generalissimo Washington, then yes that's true. However, had it been completely left up to the decentralized militia composed of the body of the civilians, then assistence from the French probably wouldn't have been necessary.

Generalissimo Washington greatly impeded progress as far as I'm concerned.

See man, you screwed up this time. If you're going to stay in character you need to know the limits. The trick to good trolling is to say something that makes people mad, but not something so dumb that they see through your plan.

I love this holiday the most, right next to Xmas. If that makes me a sap, well, bite me.

The best holiday is definitely Christmas, but Halloween is the correct runner up. THEN the 4th of July.

I love it because it means I always get the day after my birthday off. Plus it satisfies my pyromania urges.

Looks like the founding fathers couldn't foresee the future after all.

We celebrate this day to celebrate the people declaring independence from oppressive concentrated wealth and power - the sort the Republican party represents.

Since I live in MN my favorite holiday is the 4th. It is the only major holiday we get that usually has great weather. For instance memorial weekend up north was mid 60s this year. Easter was in the 40s, New Years started off around 40 and ended at 0 with 30MPH winds, god that was cold, Christmas, I think was in the teens or colder, Halloween in the 30s, and last Labor Day we got hosed as it was cold, I think in the low 60s with rain.

This weekend, well, today 95 and hot, tomorrow 87, Sunday 82, and Monday 85 :D

Is that the day we celebrate Paul Revere warning the British that they couldn't take our guns, since it was in the constitution (which hadn't been written yet)?

And we can also celebrate John Quincy Adams as a "founding father" that fought against slavery, while he was only 9? Pretty impressive feats for a 9-year old.

I distributed at least 30 copies today. What are you doing to make sure we all remember why we celebrate?

It's interesting how these 'tea party' types seem to think marketing themselves as terribly ignorant is good politics. I think it's dangerous in what it says about their real policies.

Here's a fun satire of Bachmann:

Why do you insist on derailing this thread about the forth of July with your partisan hackery? Isn't Independence Day a day we should all come together and celebrate?
Is your progressive obsession all you know? Isn't there a human being in you somewhere?
You seem like a very intelligent person. How is it then that you're one of the biggest haters in this forum.

They might represent it, but you actually build it.
