ACLU statement on Obama's signing of NDAA
President Obama Signs Indefinite Detention Bill Into Law
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 31, 2011

WASHINGTON – President Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) into law today. The statute contains a sweeping worldwide indefinite detention provision. While President Obama issued a signing statement saying he had “serious reservations” about the provisions, the statement only applies to how his administration would use the authorities granted by the NDAA, and would not affect how the law is interpreted by subsequent administrations. The White House had threatened to veto an earlier version of the NDAA, but reversed course shortly before Congress voted on the final bill....

Just in case you didn't think we were living in a Police State, there should be little doubt that we are now.

all the more reasons to give to the aclu.

Our government may over stpe their bounds and make laws like this but the constitution should bring them back in line. Of course this is hoping we dont have too many fascists in the supreme court.

Good hopefully it grabs as many of the radical Republicans in here as possible.

Now that is just darn right mean. Considering you often post about out of control "right wing" policies, you might be grabbed too.

Remember the old saying?

First they came for the communists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.

Oh, so combining the new laws with "Operation Northwoods" type of thinking, and bam.

And considering that it was proposed and rejected, it isn't to far fetched that people would question Oklahoma City bombing and 9/11.

I remember Bill. He was the guy He always bought foreign cars. Never voted. Had tattoos. Haven't seen him for years. Or his wife and kids. Wonder what ever happened to him?

finish destroying the fundamentals this country was founded on and the terrorists will have achieved exactly what they set out to do.

I am sorry but I have to go with Obama and our Government here. This is the kind of laws we need in place to help stop the terrorist plots against us. I certainly don't want to see an attack by a terrorist that kills 100 people that could have been stoped by a wire tapping or holding someone for questioning. Untill our Govermnet start abusing this law and holding US Citizens for petty crimes, then I see no harm to our civil rights.

What a twisted and silly way to look at things.

Indefinite detention is the hallmark of every despotic regime throughout history, and habeas corpus rights have been around for centuries in developed countries to prevent just that. There is simply no excuse for the government to ever have the power to indefinitely imprison someone without charges.

Civil rights always seem like a small issue until your rights are the ones being violated.

Giving up your rights for the notion of safety is a poor bargain, and always has been.

The government crossed a line here, and if we, the American people allow it to stand, we deserve a government that uses White-Out on the Bill of Rights.

Never thought I'd live to see the day!

I tend to value the "LIFE" portion of my rights higher. When there is some mass casualty report from an attack that could have been stopped, at least you can say nobody was held indefinitely.

We should probably do away with the fourth amendment too then. When there are mass casualties from an attack that could have been stopped if we just removed warrant requirements, at least you can say that no one was searched unreasonably.

In fact, people usually get their ideas from someone else, so we should remove the first amendment as well.

Did I miss any others that you would like to remove?

Absolutely, all of them must be removed.

The only way for the people to rise up is to be put down first.

This. Thanks to the rabid fear-mongering of the Bush administration coupled with a compliant and cowardly Congress -- yes, both Democrats and Republicans -- bin Laden succeeded in hurting America far beyond what must have been his wildest dreams. Sure, he created fear and caused billions in immediate damage. Far more damaging, however, is the fact he gave our so-called leaders the perfect excuse to prop up the military-industrial complex with a perpetual bogeyman and to impose all sorts of police state practices that undermine America's fundamental liberties.

It was an outrage that the Bush regime nakedly exploited the 9/11 tragedy that way. It was an outrage that the Democratic Congress did not reverse course when it could have. It is an outrage that Obama continues to embrace this bigger and ever more intrusive government. I don't know if he's doing so because he also believes in it, or if he is simply too much a coward to face the political heat of vetoing a Defense bill, but the result is the same. It's one of Obama's biggest failures in my opinion.

I hope they put you away for good. We'll see how fun it is when you're on the receiving end of your "sacrifices".
