I'm running an athlon 950 (slot a) on an abit ka7-100 with 256 mb of corsair pc133 cas3 sdram. I want a separate machine to use as a server, so I figured I'd just do a small upgrade on my current machine and use the older parts for a server. I already have two cd-roms (cd-r and dvd, that'll do), video, sound, networking, and such. I just need a case, motherboard and processor.
I've come up with this solution:
Abit kt7-raid
Athlon thunderbird 700 @950 mhz (multi unlocked)
inwin q500/300
whatever's left of $500 to cool the machine.
a friend of mine can hook me up with the mobo/cpu for $300 even. The case will run about $100 after shipping. I'll spend another $50-$100 keeping the thing cooler than a polar bear's nose.
Am I just being stupid to essentially upgrade a 950 athlon to a 950 athlon?
btw...the server will be 1 or 2 quake/half-life servers and an ircd. Shouldn't be too trying.
