Incredible CD copying speed

yesterday i've seen the most astonishing thing from a long time ago.
an ordinary CD writer, HP 10X write i think.
it copied a 700 MB CD in less than 3 Min.
nothing special about the copier itself.
when i asked the guy about the secret, all he told me that it was special config that he did over the system
and that what puzzled me. coz i though that they are some special features in the burnning software (Nero Express). but apparently this wasnt the case.
is the guy telling me the true story?

He's lying to you. 10X = 1.5MBps. For a 700MB disc, that's a whopping 7.7 minutes, plus lead in/out and TOC write time. About 9 to 10 minutes on average.

Many drives can have their firmware changed to "upgrade" another level or two, to the next version of the same brand. But that only results in a few X increase, like a 24X to 32X, or 40X to 48X, that's only one-third to one-fifth faster. There's no way he had a 10X burner and managed to flash it to 20X or higher, the drive simply can't operate at that speed when it's designed only for 10X.

You can tell exactly what speed it's burning at by looking at the status info during the burn.

Are you SURE it was a 10x drive, and are you sure that his CD was 700MB in size? Sure, you can burn less in 3 minutes something. Or, he might have been like me and replaced the drive cover of his newer 48x burner with that of his old 10x cdrw. I have a 4x creative with a cool drive cover, so I put that on my new cdrw.

well, the fact was he was showing me some muscles. last night i refered to him. he burned another 700 MB CD using a bit higher speed burnner, 16X this time. and dared me to know the secret behind it.
i went back home and try a coupla trix on my burnner witch is a 24X creative. but didnt break the 13 min barrier
is there any system config. that could spare me the dare

Whatever he's doing, it's not actually burning a CD 3 times faster than it should.

Your 24X creative seems to be pretty slow. My 6X yamaha only took 12 minutes.

I imagine you might get some more information here: http://club.cdfreaks.com/ . However I think they'll say the same thing. They've also never had any articles about something like that, so I doubt it exists, unless he just did a firmware change (which shouldn't be able to get it up to that high speed due to simple physical limitations on such a slow drive).

LOL, I figured the same thing, but didn't think anyone was actually stupid enough to notice it.

Also, if you are burning 13 minutes on a 700MB disc with a 24x burner, then you don't know how to operate your computer very well. I've never taken more than minutes with my 16x. My old 4x never took more than 22 minutes for a 700MB disc, so I would figure you a) have a bad drive or b) are burning at 6x-8x in actual fact.
