increasing mic sensitivity

I am good at singing. I tend to sing in a very.....dynamic....fashion.
I bought a $60 mic. I use an XLR-to-1/8" cable and record on Sound Forge.
When I yell with my lips to the mic, it almost reaches the peak. At normal speaking volume, it is pretty much a flat line.

How do I increase the sensitivity?
 
Hi, All mikes are not born equal. There are many types and impedences. See if you can find out the recommended type and impedence for your device. Try the sound manufacturer. Other than getting the proper mike you would need to use a proper preamp between the mike and the comp. Good Luck, Jim
 
Under your sound control panel, there should be a sound imput or microphone sensitivity adjustment.

You may also be dealing with what is called a cardoid, or semi-cardoid microphone and they are designed not to pick up nominal imputs.
