My Sony Vaio VPCF127FX consists of:
- Windows 7 64bit
- Intel i7 CPU (740QM @1.73GHz)
- 8 GB RAM (full capacity)
- 500GB SSD Samsumg EVO(upgraded from original HDD)
- 16.4" screen size

Does anyone thing I CAN add more RAM, and if I can then SHOULD I add more RAM? I believe I only have 2 slots and each have 4GB DDR RAM, however I am wondering if I can put two 8GB faster/better RAM? If I can do that, does my machine and windows7 have the ability to use any of it?

Did you go to crucial.com, punch in your laptop's model number, and see what they list as the max RAM?

well technically it would be the cpu with that limitation?

http://ark.intel.com/products/49024/Intel-Core-i7-740QM-Processor-6M-cache-1_73-GHz

Max Memory Size 8 GB

I believe it's actually limited by the supporting chipset(s) and the maximum memory size available, and due to this might turn into a motherboard bios support issue.

When 16GB sticks of DDR4 came out, people got 128GB working on X99 when ARK says max memory for all the HW-E chips is 64GB.

Edit: In this thread someone tried putting 4x4GB sticks into a laptop with a 740QM and 4 slots, but the BIOS did not recognize more than 8GB total. It's probably the bios, IMO.

whatever problems you are having with your laptop, i think the cause is the cpu, not the ram.

Thanks for the replies - really appreciate it. The confusion with some replies is also my confusion - manufacturer states 8GB max but I have seen numerous times that it is not always the limit and people have used more than the recommended max. that's why I was curious if anyone thought I could use more ram

You probably didn't even need the i7 to begin with.
