Any way I can increase the effiecny of my modem?? currently it's a 56k conexant fax/data modem. any tricks out there??

What are you wanting to increase?
You could download Download Accelerator if you want to increase your download speed...works well with broadband, not sure about dial-up.

Try PPP-Boost.

This will change some registry settings (MaxMTU, etc.) to optimize your dial-up connection. If you should ever change to broadband, you will need to set everything back to Windoze defaults.

I've seen some impressive results by using this proggy.
