Incomplete post, no boot

This is my first attempt at PC build. Once I turned on my PC, it would not post correctly. Does not recognize the HD. The first time, it lets me into the BIOS. I load uptimal settings because otherwise it does not boot. I do get the message of "CMOS wrong" or "CMOS Checksum Error". I was able to install Windows XP and download BIOS and driver upgrades. But when I reboot, it does not post at all. I checked all components, seated them again, etc. PC boots again if I clear the BIOS.
Any insights on what to do?

AMD Anthlon 64 3400+
MSI K8TNEO2-F Socket 939
2 Ultra 512 MB PC 3200 DDR 400Mhz
AGP XFX Geforce FC 5200 128MB
Seagate Barracuda 120GB 7200 Ultra ATA/100

I think that a 3400 is socket 754 only.

Correct you are sir!

I do believe our buddy here has force fed a 754 processor into a 939 socket. Man, that's gotta suck.

To the OP: You need a new proc. Try a Winchester core'd Athlon 64. Excellent overclocking.

I purchased this mobo together with the processor at tigerdirect. This clearly stated that it is a 939 socket: AMD Athlon 64 3400+ / 512KB Cache / 1600MHz FSB / Socket 939 / Processor. I can't figure out if the BIOS or CMOS are at fault, or something else.

Come on guys. There is an OEM 939/3400, with a cripled 800HT. These were originally released for Compaq/HP, but it seems TD has been selling alot of them. 😉

You sure? I can't find one for sale anywhere. I'll take your word for it though.

Not that the HT really matters anyway. It's performance impact is about the same as bridged video cards vs. unbridged - 1-2% at most. I suppose it would have an impact if you were OCing tho.

newegg had some of those socket 939 3400 A64 cpus a few weeks ago. they were also in a motherboard/cpu combo deal. there are also some strange socket 754 3300(2.4Ghz) A64 cpus in some hp computers. very confusing.

Sheesh. Not only does HP use higher latency RAM, but also they use crappy processors.

One of the obvious problems is that the HT needs to be manually set @ 4X instead of the default 5X. This could be the problem. 😉

I just setup a MSI Neo2 Plat. Same sort of problem. I had the 2nd RAM in the wrong slot. Moved it one over and presto!

Of course... I'm a dumbass though 🙂
