1. Can't believe no one called out OP for having the username "eliteretard" and posting this thread.
2. This is reading like a mild version of /r/nosleep.

and what happened? you had to pay?

Nothing happened as of yet. Long story short the guy hit me, took pics, and drove off. I followed him into a parking lot to exchange info and when I had gotten out of my car he had left the vicinity. I took pics and called the cops right then and they told me since there were no witnesses I would be at fault since his rear end hit me. The cop said I could report it and be at fault (and the guy would have a hit/run from the scene) or just wait for him to make a claim (I was already covered legally since I called the police). This was over 3 months ago.

Also, in the future, if someone gives you a phone #, dial it right there to see if their phone rings. It's a good way to make sure you got a legit number.

if you called your insurance company for the tow, and you called the insurance company from their phone, ask the insurance company what number you called from that day

if they wont tell you, then when they ask what number they can reach the other party at, say that one i called from that day and that you lost it

sometimes call center systems log, automatically, in the acct notes the number the customer was calling from. ANI is more potent than simple caller id, as well

Look at the insurance policy paperwork - There are no license plate numbers.

Guy who hit me gave me his license#, phone #, insurance info, and I took down the plate number. I called his insurance company and they said they can't do anything without the VIN. The guy who hit me never returned my calls for the VIN.

Luckily, I remembered that he was wearing a uniform for Bass Pro shops, so I went to their parking lot and found his truck! :sneaky: Wrote down the VIN and successfully filed claim.

My two lessons: (1) VIN, and (2) file police report.

Strange. I've never had an insurance company tell me they can do nothing without the VIN number

Great thread. I was high and ran into the back of an illegal who gave me bogus information. Gobs of entertainment at a price that can't be beat.

Hardly ever need it, but i keep a USB Phone charger cable that connects to the car cigarette lighter in my car. Just in case I ever stuck and my phone battery is low or dead. Say stuck in a blizzard for hours and need to get in touch for help. Well worth the few dollars it cost. Any accident just take your phone and get a few photos of the cars, accident scene, shots of the other persons, DL, Reg, Insurance cards. And of course, always have notepad and pen in car.

I'll be surprised if their isn't a claim filed against the OP.

If there isn't, it's pure luck.

Where do you find the VIN?

I pay for insurance twice a year, and am sent 2 cards for each vehicle, 1 for my wallet, and one I keep in the cars visor. The VIN numbers, and expiration dates are printed on those. Handy, if the cops ask, going through my glove box is like going through my wife's purse.D:

All except the 10 yr old saturn part (about 20lbs overweight). I've had/have a 70's F250 Ranger, an 80's T-Bird, 90's Cougar and LHS, 2000's wagon, and this 2010's car.

Picture something like this?

So far everything is working out, there was additional damage done to my car but it sounds like they will be fixing that too.
