incoming college freshmans at the same internship :(

so an incoming freshman (who hasn't even started college yet) is doing an internship with the same company that I'm interning with and I'm a senior who should've graduated by now 🙁
There are quite a few who are freshmen, sophomores,etc.
If they play their cards right, leveraging their internship experience to get better and better ones, by the time they graduate they will have a sweet job

I'm just pissed off at myself that this will be my only internship before I graduate.. I wasted almost every summer not doing much. I wish I had the opportunity to go back and try different industries by interning in various places. I really didn't think about much of anything when I graduated from h.s. because I grew up in the countryside. There's quite a difference between a kid who grew up in the middle of nowhere full of old retired people and a kid who grew up in New York City.

I really wish I knew what I wanted to do earlier... I'm sure everyone feels that way though :/
 
Yup, we'd all do things differently 10, even 5 years ago.

Deal with it, and get to know your freshmen interns.. they could be your colleagues or boss one day 😉
 
If there is any advice I'd give anyone going to college, it would be to go to a school that has a co-op program. It made all the difference in starting salary for me.
 
I regret not doing a co-op or internship, but things will work out. Just don't be afraid to initially jump around to a few different jobs to get to the level you are content with.
 
Don't worry too much about it. You're that much ahead of people that didn't even do any sort of internship in college.
 
You're doing an intership. All it's about is networking and work experience. The advantage you have over the freshmen is that you can go out drinking with coworkers after hours. In some fields like computer work, accounting, and law firms that goes a long way.
 
There's still an overwhelming majority of grads that are:

A) Still living in their parents basement looking for work
B) Still living in their parents basement because the work they have doesn't pay much
C) Still looking for a job actually related to their degree
D) Still wondering why they wasted the last 4 years of their life on the degree they did

Things for you aren't looking too bad.
 
At work now (IT) doing something totally unrelated to my field (hole digger Civil Engineer). For some classic-me retarded reason, I told myself that jobs with private companies were the devil. Hurray for public service, where the interviewers have no direction or won't even look at me (I'm not that ugly😉). Oh well, at least the benefits, that I don't qualify for yet, and pay is good.

my school has a decent co-op program but isn't it mostly for engineering students?
I switched out of engineering and I didn't even know about co-op until my 3rd year
I just couldn't fit it into my schedule since I was already behind in terms of graduation

Haha, yeah. I'll probably end up doing post grad work for what I want to do! So don't sweat it anyways, you have your whole life ahead of you!

I almost didn't even get this one and I'm glad I ended up with this one because I have been able to take two courses towards my major while doing this internship
 
i'm entering my junior year and i haven't started my intern yet. my counselor said i'm not even ready for an intern until after junior year.

how long have you been in college?
If I remember, didn't you switch your major and it pushed your graduation back?
 
It just shows that your company is imcompetent at getting interns. They got freshmen when they pobably could have at least gotten juniors. They probably got their internships by connections (like I did when I was a incoming frosh) not through normal channels.

yeah, i switched majors. my counselor said i need more knowledge with the softwares i'll learn this year (rhino3d and maya.) i've learned solidworks and autocad in the previous years. after learning rhino3d and maya, i'll be ready for internship.

that's really lame, though.
 
The college I went to wouldn't give internships to anyone under the Junior level. It kept it from watering down the applicant pool, meaning better jobs for juniors & seniors.

What are freshmen qualified to do anyways? I woudn't want one working under me.

I'm in my last semester of a co-op (4th overall), and I'm going to try to get a good internship next summer. Hopefully it will help me get some better starting salaries.
