Oh, sorry, I forgot the important part: That is a really good school and if you apply yourself and study hard you might be able to transfer to Univ. Wisconsin someday. ;)

Congrats!

1. Grainger NEVER closes, well technically on saturday/sunday morning at like 3, there's "Computer Maintenance"(Not sure my friend's experienced it but I've never been there then) but get a life if you're there on a Saturdy night.

2. Have fun working your but off for 4 years on a tight schedule 16-18hours are the norm. Which engineering are you in? ME is almost impossible to transfer into so you pretty much have to start off in it. Aero and I think Bio are pretty hard too because it's just a smaller school.

3. Do NOT apply for Pennsylvania Ave residences(FAR from classes, smells like manure in fall and spring because of Animal Sciences nearby), it sucks the will to live out of you.
Choices should be in order
...1) Illinois Street Residences: Best facilities, right next to quad and classes
...2) 6 pack(Gregor Drive/Peabody drive): De-facto freshman housing, lots of parties
...3) Florida Avenue: Right next to Penn Avenue, and about 20 minute walk from class but at least it's air conditioned.
Lincoln ave is women only
Allen & Busey Evans are just full of hippies. I'm not even kidding, I wish I was.

As far as Private Certified, there decent ones are Bromley(lots of women), Illini Tower(Close to class) and Greek living(assuming you get initiated)

4. Beginning of the semester, all the Frats hold Rush/Welcome parties, take advantage of the Greek system. It's the biggest in America and it's quite an experience. Find the right Frat and it's also rewarding as hell in the philanthropy, social and leadership aspects.

5. Campus bars: There's a lot and there's quite a few that will go easy on the 19 to enter thing... No real club scene though, but most bars are basically the same thing(Murphy's is the 1 big exception off the top of my head).
Things I've learned:
Joes has a stripper pole( I'm pretty sure but I could be wrong, was there as a stop of the ME College bar crawl so my memory is fuzzy)
Kam's smells but is the easiest to get in
Murphys makes the most "honest" drinks
Firehaus makes very, very watered down drinks
Clybourne's gets messy
CO Daniel's is affiliated with I think Kappa Sig/Tri Delts(Not too sure, may be another frat, I don't go there much) so those people get special treatment over everyone else
Brother's isn't bad at all, I like it
Legends, no real experience yet.
White Horse closed down recently, used to have a "Stoli's Suprise" which was basically straight up different kinds/flavors of vodka on the rocks in a pint size cup. Fun times...
FU Bar: One of the better ones if you want to order a expensive drink with high class alcohol(Patron, Grey Goose, etc.).
I'm sure I'm missing a couple off the top of my head...

6. It's cold. Hellishly. You're going to hate snow and sleet.

7. For the love of god, when registering for classes, make them as late in the day as possible. You'd think 8am isn't too bad, I mean high school started at around 7am, but 8am 5 days a week will make you want to shrivel up and die.

8. Have fun, there's no better school to go to and you'll have the time of your life socially and academically if you play your cards right.

Jeez don't live at ISR if you want anything that resembles a social life. I did for 2 years...big mistake. Yes Allen is 100% hippies. Live at the 6-pack.

UIUC is an awesome combo of academic quality and social life. Enjoy it. If you manage your time right you can really party it up and keep a good GPA. Get season football and basketball tickets if you are at all interested in sports. I used to love the weeknight basketball games...a great break from class and homework during the week.

BTW, congrats!

Depends on what you make of it, I mean parties are hardly hard to come by, as long as you meet people. I mean I have friends in Hendrick House that go out and have fun every weekend even though Hendrick house is pretty much the worst place socially to be.

Right, but the chance of making dorm friends that want to go to parties from a place like ISR or Hendrick House is much lower than say the 6-pack. The idea of fun for the people on my floor of ISR was staying in and watching a movie EVERY GOD DAMNED WEEKEND for the entire year. Sorry, I'm a bit bitter.

As someone that lived in Hendrick House...don't. If I had to do it again, I'd probably live in Bromley...lots of social people, good location, not too expensive (if I remember). I loved UIUC...it was hard but had the time of my life.
