IBM because of their rock solid build and quality (best of the best)

Dell because of the bang for the buck

Apple because of the features and design of both the hardware and the os

If your dad is buying a laptop for work make him get a thinkpad.

had a ibm and all i can say it sucked bad. i called it a stinkpad.
i had to give a compaq 7700 which was a p1 233 and the stinkpad was a p2 300 and the compaq ran circles around the ibm.

we are getting dells at work and they are having a 5-10% failure rate it varies from hd, system boards, modems, and lcd screens.

the older compaqs like the 7700 and the 7800 were really reliable but the new ones m700 were not as reliable but they were still better than the dells.

those are the only ones i have dealt with and there is no way i would buy a ibm or a dell.

compaq for me.

For about $1200... The Toshibas are nice.

My opinion states: IBM, Dell, Toshiba. They handed out Thinkpad A21m's for us as our work machines. Solid.

IBM
Compaq
Toshiba
In order of preference. IBM, again, because of durability and all out quality
Although I have to say I'm really liking my Panasonic Toughbook, but it's a niche product so I wont include it...

apple
ibm

dell and the rest are tied and ignored at the bottom. (sister, mom, and dad were sent defective dells: no experience with any others and i just dont like anything made by compaq.)

IBM.
Apple is good to if he doesn't care about it being a windows machine.

Toshiba, Compaq, Dell, and Sony in no particular order all deserve honourable mentions as well, but IBM wins.

I got my IBM T21 for $1000, so if you look hard enough i know you could find a thinkpad for less than $1200... also, IBM's have excellent re-sale value.

IBM - excellent quality, keyboard, tech support, service for thinkpads

that's the only laptop brand that i've owned for wintel... started with a 560... then 560E, 760, 765L, 600, 600E (still owned this one.. still running strong.. not the battery though).

have played with other big brands..... but once u owned a thinkpad... u won't look for others.

Don't get the i-series... they r actually made by ACER.

I love my HP Omnibook 6000. Too bad HP is dropping the line in favor of EVOs :( IBM's are good. Toshiba Tecras are good. I would avoid sony. They look cool, but they are nothing but problems in my exp. Dell's do the deed. I don't like gateway. my $0.02 :)
