I don't think there is a winning way the US can play this. Let Russia run amoke or risk a major war?

personally i think we should talk with russia. 10+ years of war is enough for a very long time.

Thank you. It's difficult to find a voice of reason on this, apparently, hot topic.

The question then, is how do we move forward with talks? We need a goal in mind. My position this entire time has been to let Crimea take the lead, in what happens in Crimea.

I have to say that this is the first time since Iraq I've seen someone attempt to cast an armed invasion and occupation of a country as 'freedom'.

Um... just wait around until America invades the next unsuspecting 3rd world nation, it will be sold as a war for freedom. That is how war is sold.

Yeah as an American I think what we did in Iraq was 100% bullshit. A preemptive strike with no evidence to support the allegations of WMD or any threat.

Russia pulled this one from the US playbook.

It is awfully odd to see the roles switched here. It is especially baffling that people think someone like Putin is doing this for 'freedom'.

The same guy who is currently jailing his own people for the unforgivable crime of protesting this invasion is the guy who is totally invading Crimea for the freedom of the Russians there. Riiiiiiiiiiight.

I wish people would apply the critical thinking they use about the US government to foreign governments.

It is Russian version of "Operation Iraqi Freedom".

The tartars and the Ukrainians too? 100% of the ethnic Russians?

Without that they don't even have a majority.

60% are Russians, and not 100% of ethnic Ukrainians are against it either, since many are culturally and linguistically Russian.
But we'll find out soon enough since a referendum is coming at the end of March.

Seems like your issue is with the people of Crimea who don't want to be ruled by Kiev. They WANT Russian troops there to protect them.

My issue is the Kosovo situation and Crimea are not at all similar. So it is a terrible reasoning to invade Ukraine.

Why is the US supporting the coup in Ukraine? A band of ragtag thugs overthrow a democratically elected government and the US is supporting them....

Would they be happy with some random militia storming Washington DC and overthrowing them too?

So which is it, are we for democracy or are we for military dictatorship?

is 2014 the year that we no longer become the world's policeman? not like that's a bad thing (imo)

How US officials have the nerve to criticize Russia's actions is beyond me. The US is the king of invade for no good reason and kill on sight. WTF are we doing trying to criticize Russia for protecting its interests in an unstable region? Sickening.

I think the outcome is quite obvious, but the West is not excepting the inevitable without complaining.

Yes, that someone would have the temerity to criticize a country for invading their neighbors is the truly sickening thing here.

Are you guys kidding?

I agree that it may not be a bad thing as I have often thought it was time to bring it to a close, but I do wonder what will be the indicator that it was a good plan...or not.
