I have completely lost my patientce with Trump supporters. They are the reason they still print directions on bottles of shampoo, and still give instructions on how to exit full screen mode on youtube videos.

Reasoning, using facts, are ineffective as showing powerpoints to any other single cell lifeform.

The reign of Trump was actually going really well for most people (well, not illegal immigrants, but mostly everyone else) before COVID-19 hit. Your 401K and IRA certainly loved him, anyway.

I guess that you could try to blame him for the spread of COVID-19, but most of his fans would never believe you. They're all blaming China for this, which honestly is a pretty good place to put the blame.

It's only a good place to put the blame if you're an idiot (aside: it just so happens that the Venn diagram between idiots and Trump supporters is nearly a perfect circle). China is not responsible for the Trump administration's colossal fuck-ups in managing this crisis.
 
Not an economist, but I’d love to know why should trump get credit for the economy? He’s responsible for the record earnings by Amazon and Apple? Is consumer confidence really at the US market or POTUS?

A lot of countries screwed up their response to COVID-19. You can't blame Trump for all of them (well, I guess that you could, but then you're putting yourself in that Venn diagram of yours), but you can blame the country that let the virus escape their country to begin with.

A number of countries have also had competent responses. You can blame China for their issues, but those are really independent of the domestic responses.

Stock markets can be artificially manipulated and judging our economic health on the stock market or "mah 401K) is not the wisest thing to do.

I feel it's actually very hard to work out which countries have got it right. Probably won't be possible till years after it's over. There have been a variety of different responses.

Just look at the completely contradictory assessments of Sweden's choice, for example. Right now some people are saying it's shaping up to be a total disaster, while others are claiming it's starting to show positive results.

The thing about Trump's behaviour, though, is that he hasn't had any kind of coherent or consistent response. Whatever the right answer turns out to be, it's highly unlikely he'll have had it, because he's flip-flopped around and dithered and generally hasn't admitted there's a problem that needs an answer in the first place.

Other countries might turn out to have made the wrong choice of strategy, but I don't see any scenario where Trump could be 'right' because he hasn't followed any strategy at all.

So, the 'shit hole' cities suffering most from COVID19 are Democratic - yet, COVID19 is a hoax - yet, it's a serious threat in China that China is downplaying resulting in exposing us to danger here in the USA - yet, it's a hoax - yet, only Trump can fix it - yet, he takes no responsibility for anything that goes wrong - yet, he saved billions in a country that is only 320 million...

This further proves that conservatives do not know how to govern... at all. They push for improbable goals and are disconnected from reality because; 1. they don't want to really govern - they just want to dictate and abuse our system and 2. they don't like any of us - they frankly view us with contempt... which is why they are OK with you getting COVID19 while they horde masks themselves. They want YOU to head out there, while they are wrapped up in PPE and staying away from the public.

The only scenario where Trump is right is if we start to see signs of economic recovery and the death toll is something a majority deems as acceptable.

It will be interesting to see how Sweden fairs relative to the rest of Europe when all is said and done.

I disagree that even that would make Trump 'right'. It would mean he didn't screw up, but only by accident. Also, even if a majority deem a death toll 'acceptable', that doesn't mean everyone has to agree - particularly true for those who died!

I'm skeptical about Sweden - I don't think it's fair to compare it with places like France or the UK or Italy, because the conditions are entirely different. Much lower population density, the majority of the population live alone, and there are far fewer intergenerational households than in those other countries. Younger population than Italy also. Compared to the neighbouring Scandinavian countries that have locked down, it is doing very badly.

But, it seems that the death rates have plateaued there, albeit at a higher level than those neighbouring countries. And who knows what's going to happen in those other countries when the lock-downs end? So still too early to say.

What does occur to me is that, for all its (mis)representation in the US as a 'socialist' country, Sweden had a bad history with embracing eugenics, more so that almost anywhere else outside of Nazi Germany. So in that context, the worry that they might be sacrificing the elderly and the sick in favour of ensuring the greater fitness of the majority makes me uneasy.

But maybe there's no 'good' strategy? There are so many unknowns. But at least Sweden is consciously following a strategy they believe will work (say what you will about eugenics, but at least it's an ethos). I don't think Trump deserves that much credit, all he's thinking about is his election chances and his financial interests.

Good post. I would add that while its easy to point to North Korea and Taiwan and say we should replicate their success, as you pointed out, there are cultural dynamics at play that make each nation a bit unique in terms of how the pandemic is playing out.

Our cultural dynamic is a sometimes irrational premium placed on individual liberty and capitalism, with a balancing act between a strong federal government and sovereign states.
