Yeah, I'm thinking I'll just keep what I have with the P35 mobo.. and then upgrade CPU/RAM as needed. My main goal is to have a great machine for Alan Wake when it comes out in 2008. Core 2 Quad, 8600GTS, 4GB on Vista 64.

Alan Wake + 8600GTS = 800x600 5 FPS 😛

Newegg will shave off at least another $25 by the end of this week, but Q6600 prices won't get much farther than a couple of bucks below $266 for at least the next month.

Well, the good news, well at least for those looking for a G0 stepping, is that Newegg is out of stock of Q6600s.

Here's hoping they restock with G0 chips.

My thanks to everyone who couldn't wait. 😉

I dunno.. I've heard it ran beautifully on a 7900.. and the 8600GTS is easily the equal of the 7900. 🙂

A single 7950GT beats out an 8600GTS SLI setup in the same system. The 7900GS is roughly equal and sometimes better than the 8600GTS. 3DGURU.com.

although for me, for everything else its VISA! 😛

Yeah, same here actually. I prefer to use my VISA over my Mastercard. 🙂

It will be interesting to see where NewEgg sets the price when they get stock ..

Interesting isn't the word for it. It's at $345 right now a Newegg. I hope that those are G0s.

Assuming those are G0s, it would appear that you are correct.

I guess it makes sense. Retailers take a loss on existing inventory when there are price drops, so why not make some of that back when demand is high on the new stepping? Reasonable, but I'm not buying a Q6600 at nearly $350 whether or not it is a G0.

Woah, that's crazy. When the Q6600's first came back in stock several hours ago @ Newegg, the price was $320. People must have been buying them up like crazy for the price to jump up $25 in just a few hours.

Personally, I've got my G0 pre-order in at tankguys but as soon as confirmed G0's start shipping from some other retailer for < $300, I'm jumping on it. The rest of my system is showing up today so all that's left is the Q6600 and I'm getting impatient. =)

My bank account says its missing $286 from clubit, seems like they already charged my card. They must have G0 available since I preordered it 😀

I had a print-out of the $299 price that newegg had this morning, and my boss sold me one of the ones we had in stock for the same price. I have no idea if it is a G0 stepping or not, I don't know how to tell if it is or not.

So I got fed up with the Egg's price gouging over the past 12 hours. But rather than complaining about it all day, I decided to just go buy it at Fry's Electronics. I now have a B3 Q6600 in my hands!

They "force" you to buy a bundle that costs $299 - the receipt shows $266.92 for the Q6600 and $33.07 for the ECS P4M900T motherboard. I'm hoping I can somehow return just the motherboard 😉

If it's of any interest, the pack date on my SL9UM is: 07/11/07. Now I just gotta wait for the rest of my components to arrive!

Edit: I purchased my Q6600 bundle at the Fry's in Manhattan Beach - two other guys were buying the exact same bundle as me. The employee noted that they had been selling them quite quickly throughout the day and that they had around 10 left as of 4:00pm. Also, buying the chip alone still costs $565 for some reason, even though they are pulling from the exact same stock.

LOL I'm done too. Bought one over on the F/S side of things. B3, but - whatever. If I "need" to change over to G0, there's always ebay. I kind of doubt I'll be too worried about it.

look at the sticker... it should say.... PRODUCT CODE: XXXXXX......SL9UM for B3

XXXXXX.....SLACR for G0

It is a B3 stepping then.

Still, I am just glad I printed that page out before the price went up to $345. 😀

Edit, got it installed today. Stays about the same temp as my e6600 did with my Ultra120 extreme (About 35C idle with my current computer room temp). Maybe I had the thing installed wrong before, I was expecting much higher temps with that cooler. I don't know the load temps yet, I just got the machine booted up with the new processor.

The newegg price has gone up way too high. It's sitting at $375 right now. I'm not sure if that's price gouging or if Newegg doesn't want to run out of stock (they really try to never have that happen on popular products). Either way based on newegg and other etailers, it looks like the Q6600 are flying of the shelves due to strong demand at even a $300 price point and anyone buying one in a couple of weeks should have no problem getting a G0.

Oh and thanks to swtethan for the product code info; that will come in handy later.

I just checked the price of the Xeon X3220, which in the server version of the Q6600. It's sitting at $315 with free shipping. I have no idea what stepping it might be although I'd guess that it's B3.

Edit: Xeon X3220

What we need is information when someone finds a store that's selling G0's. Of course, it will probably sell out within the hour, but some store out there has to be willing to make sure the proc is a G0 if it is specifically requested.

I remember when the Malaysian made Celeron 300 Mhz chips were so hot and some companies were specifying the "Malaysia" stamp on them.

No, I'm not old...

First Q6600 G0 (that I'm aware of) seen in the wild: NCIX

It's Canadian so I have no idea how the shipping and import tax thing works.

It shouldn't be a problem. NCIX has a whole branch dedicated to US customers.

Edit: They kill you on shipping. The USD price is $284.54 but the only shipping options to my SoCal address are FedEx Air @ $26.64 for 1-6 days and $29.49 for one day. Still, that's $311.18 for a guaranteed G0. Not too bad I guess, but still too rich for my blood.

I'm gonna try to hit up Microcenter tomorrow in Paterson and see what the deal is with the G0 stepping will report back here once I find out. They are priced at $299 online, if its G0 @ B&M, I'll own one tomorrow 🙂
