As for specific Opeth songs, here's some suggestions:

"Bleak"

Not sure if you're into metal, but I feel like many people can at least appreciate their musical talent. The vocalist does both the growl and singing (extremely good at both), plays guitar, and writes all the music. Their songs are all long (like 10 minutes), and it can take a few listens through to "get" it. But, once you do, it's incredible. Also, they're progressive, so they're not strictly metal. They mix tons of genres. Their "Damnation" album is a 100% soft album.

Probably my fav new metal band of the 00's has to be Protest the Hero and their first album Kezia in 2005. I just love how fresh and innovative it sounds as a concept album and still gets endless play in my car to this day.

Lady Gaga hasn't done anything earth shattering IMO. Some catchy pop songs performed well, nothing more.

If you want to look at someone who burst onto the scene and made some huge hits, look at Jagged Little Pill, like every song on that album went to #1 at some point. Fame Monster on the other hand has some real duds.

As for this decade, Muse comes to mind as a good band that has thier own style and makes great music.
