Can I probably do better buying a car in the country of manufacture & shipping it home, than buying from a dealer at home? If so, about how much would I save, generally speaking?

Please assume the car is bought in a foreign country already California-compliant, with all the extra requirements like door safety sidebars, smog control, etc. already configured.

Say I bought a brand new Porsche in Germany or a high-end Volvo in Sweden, for example.

Or, what if I bought low-mileage slightly used versions of those same cars? Do you have any suggestions on how best to handle that?

Also, can I probably do better making the arrangements for such a deal myself, instead of going through the local US dealer?

Thank you.
