In this age of broadband....

are there sites that actually host .wav files, instead of mp3s?

I know mp3s are all the rage because file size is small, you can convert them back to .wav, etc., etc., etc., but are there hard core music fanatics that download .wavs? Better yet, are there any sites that actually go to this amount of trouble?

Granted, with .wav files file size is HUGE, hosting would be a problem (because of the size), it would take a long time to download, and overall it's not all that practical. But the quality would be SO much better.

I'm not trolling for any sites that host .wav files, because I'm on 56k. And if I ever did find a site that did, I wouldn't even bother. It'd take too damn long! 🙂

I was just curious about this because it seems more feasible as more and more people get access to broadband.

Anyone know?

Well no, just think about it, if you're so picky that you have to have the absolute best quality, you'll be buying the CD, not downloading it. So again I say:

No.

Now if there were 200+ GB drives available, and people would be willing to use their server (connected with 5 OC-3 lines) for hosting .wav files of +/- 35 MB a piece...

True, and good point, but there are still people that would do it if they could.

<< If they had all that space and bandwidth, they'd probably say screw wav files and go divx. >>

There are people downloading divx movies. Aren't they around 700+ MB?

That's why I was asking about .wav files.

Look up SHNs...they compress .wav files but they are pretty much lossless compression. They are still 5x the size of mp3s, but are an alternative.

you guys are wrong. there are entire albums released in wav format. furthermore, this is not new and the first i knew of it being done (ie: by a pirate group in an organzied fashion) was back in late 97 early 98. if you think size is a factor you are sorely mistaken because the iso scene has been around for years now (since early 97?) and that's full game cds, often multiple cds (ie: final fantasy 8 = 5 cds). full wav albums are no different. i have seen iso ftps with over 50 isos, and that was just some random guys public ftp. imagine how big a truly underground group distro would be? so there could easily be a 50 album wav ftp out there... although probably not since the scene is so small.

also, you need to remember getting large amounts of hd space is not exactly hard for a pirate group. every group has at least 1 or 2 members who usually work at a major company such as microsoft or intel or ibm etc, and they supply things. here is an article on the pwa bust and pwa alone had 5 members working at intel: http://www.cybercrime.gov/pirates.htm

ok, this is getting off topic. wav trading exists. the end.

Ah! So they DO exist!

That was an interesting read rubix. I remember PWA in my days of software pirating...

And there are definitely trading going on of wav files. My cousin records Dave Mathews concerts and distributes it using some kind of lossless compression. It usually ends up being half the file size. I'm sure similar things go on with other bands except in his case, it's perfectly legal since Dave Mathews allows the live recordings of his show.
