What is there to do in this area that isn't a total tourist trap? Looking for something relatively close and would be memorable.

There's some decent food but, the best idea is to find a place you like and stay there. Otherwise, you will spend 90 % of your time in the road. Phoenix is a huge city what none of the attractions of older cities. If you like glitz and spending money, you can find it in Phoenix.

Go climb Piestewa Peak or Camel Back. Eat at the Persian Room. Get the ice cream sandwiches at the Caspian Market. Leave. Drive west of Wickenburg to see the Joshua trees.

The winter rains sucked this year so no desert bloom.

What type of things to do are you looking for, what part of Phoenix are you in, and how far do you want to go? General touristy things in town:

Phoenix Zoo and Desert Botanical Gardens are both just east of Sky Harbor Airport. If you're the hiking type, both South Mountain and Camelback Mountain have hiking trails and are in town. Superstition Mountain on the east side of the valley is a good hike as well. Lost Dutchman's Mine is on the way out to Superstition Mountain, but I'd say that's getting close to the tourist trap line. Heritage Square Dining which includes the previously mentioned Pizza Bianco is supposed to be some of the best food in the country. Old Town Scottsdale if you're into shopping. There's a handful of museums in town.

If driving a couple hours is an option there's a few other possibilities.

Getter drunk AF then fuk her brains out all night in your benz with the sun roof open, preferably parked at the end of an airport runway while she rides you in the back seat

Probably more effort than you'd like but wife and I loved Sedona and it's only a 2 hour drive away. I'd probably just drive up, overnight there and go back to phoenix next day.

Top Golf isn't too far of a drive, it's like a driving range on steroids, super fun:

If you're into food & want recommendations, I have a foodie buddy who lives in Phoenix that I can get a list from. Scottsdale is right outside Phoenix & has a ton of stuff, like Old Town if you're into art stuff. Find a place you can watch the sunrise & sunset. Camel Back is awesome. iirc Phoenix was top-ranked in pizza nationwide, oddly enough. If you want to do romantic stuff, there are a couple really nice hotels that have great restaurants & unique stuff like a romance manager & one that used to offer gondola rides.

Drive up to the top of South mountain and watch the sunset. There's a Mexican restaurant at the base (Los Dos Molinos) that's pretty good .

For the weekend I'd recommend going up to Sedona also. Northern AZ is awesome.
