In the market for a new laptop

I am graduating in a week actually and want to sell my Desktop (which incidently I just recently upgraded) and buy a laptop so it makes me more mobile. Plus its more useful when I start working.

I want to buy a laptop which would allow me to perform normal web/software development tasks plus play some games like Age of Empires III. My current desktop specs are:
P IV 2.3 Ghz
768 MB RAM
GeForce 6800 NU
240 GB HD (160+80)

I want a laptop with similar settings (well, the HD size can be reduced, thats fine).

But the question is what company laptop should I be looking for?

Also, I know some companies allow us to upgrade their laptops, so I can buy like 512 RAM from the company and later upgrade it to 1 gig, can same be done with Harddrive memory?

My desktop right now is a dell, so my first choice is also a dell.

I am open to suggestions.

Thanks 🙂

Take a look at the Inspiron 9300. This has the 6800 go GPU in it and you should be able to play AOE 3 with it with little issues. I would recommend purchasing the least amount of ram offered and then picking up a 1gb stick from your favorite online vendor (I think newegg.com is cheapest right now with a 1gb transcend stick for around $70) and doing the memory upgrade your self. The draw back of the 9300 IMHO is that it is a 17" notebook. This makes battery life less then others and increases the weight. If you want to be mobile then this notebook may not be for you.

Also look at the DV4000 form HP. The x700 card in it should also be fine for AOE3 and it is quite a bit lighter then the I9300 (15.4" screen versus the 17"). I recommend doing the same thing here for the memory.

From your post it sounded as if you were about to graduate high school? If so are you going to college? If this is the case you should probably wait until you enroll as you will get an education discount on either of these notebooks (As well as most other large OEMs). I just purchased a DV4000 a while back and was able to utilize my wife?s educational discount to knock the price down just over $200.

EDIT:

One last note... Both of the notebooks I mentioned are P-M based machines. The clock speed of the processor is less then your current desktop P-4 but they are still faster machines. The P-M gets more work done per clock cycle. Just as a reference the P-M 1.6GHz 533FSB roughly equates to a P-4 2.6-2.8 FSB800. This is not an exact science but perform consensus says I'm pretty close.

I have a Dell 9300 and am very happy with it. You would easily be able to get one on you budget. If you decide on the dell make sure you do a google search for coupons

I'm not looking for a 17" display. They are just to big for my liking. If I could I'd get a 15" display but I like the higher resolution with the 15.4".
