in the market for a netbook

so what the best cheap netbook to get these days? As far as good keyboard and hopefully somewhat fast... kinda proven ya know?

One that doesn't get HOT would be nice as well...

Thanks

i'm looking to pick up an acer aspire one 522. it's got the new amd fusion setup, there's a guy who made a video on amazon detailing it. looks pretty solid. light gaming on a 10" screen, 720p resolution, smooth streaming video.

i think the atom cpu is slow enough (borderline not useable for everyday use, but its still just above that mark so its OK), but most netbooks still have intel gma graphics and those... well... hurl

amd fusion is the way to go. even if you have to drop a little extra cash now to get one, you will be happy in 6 months when amd's are all thats in this segment as atoms get phased out (or refreshed to a faster speed with nvidia graphics). still though, as long as intel uses separate graphics chips then amd will hold the battery life lead.

Read me!

The new AMD Fusion netbooks are going to kick some serious ass, if you'll pardon the enthusiasm. IMHO there's no reason to consider any Intel-based netbook anymore, except if you can find one dirt cheap on clearance.

I have a Dell M101Z and like it alot. i have the single core 1.7ghz. way faster than atom. you can get one off delloutlet last time i checked starting out at 349. my battery lasts me between 4.5 hours to 6 hours depending on what I am doing

Thanks for you reply. Yeah I've been looking at AMD fusion. But sadly there are few netboks to choose from I'm not very fond of Acer. Maybe Dell will come out with a fusion netbook soon......

Thanks, I will be living with this laptop as my main computer for awhile because I will be traveling a lot.

The Acer Aspire One 522 looks really nice.

You might check out Dell Mini 1012 as well. Last time I checked you could get new ones for about $300 on eBay, I picked one up a couple months ago. Two things I really like are the screen (1366x768 resolution, this is really, really nice for a 10" netbook) and Broadcom Crystal HD card for watching HD video. Other than that, though, it's pretty standard as far as netbooks go. Atom N450, 1GB RAM, 250GB HDD, 6-cell, etc.

edit: It does get a bit warm, though, since the netbook has no cooling fan and relies on passive cooling. Although cooling seems to be pretty well designed, the palm rest area doesn't get that warm on mine. But the keyboard and bottom especially can get kind of warm.

The Fusion netbooks should be rolling out pretty soon.

I am looking forward to reading reviews of the ASUS 1015B myself.

I just bought the acer 522 myself. I am pretty pleased with it so far. It is noticeably snappier than my wife's older N270 netbook. Build quality seems pretty solid. I think I would recommend it.

Hi guys,

I'm considering picking up one of these to replace a really old laptop (AXP-based) that has always seen very occasional use. Its usage will mainly be for web-browsing, media streaming and dabbling with Ubuntu on it. I plan to replace the 1GB RAM with a 4GB module. Might consider replacing its 5400rpm HDD with a 7200rpm one.

Is the 1GHz speed on the CPU going to be noticably slow for these general tasks? I'm not expecting miracles from it but at least I would like it to be comfortably smooth to use.

Thanks.

I can't find any E-350-based laptop with 10/11in screens where I am (Australia) for similar price. I can get this AO522 unit plus 4GB RAM upgrade for about $400; A similarly-sized unit with E-350 APU will cost 50% more. 🙁

u can get the Acer AO722 with 4gb RAM for 378.99 or so on amazo and 379.99 on Acer.com...i am looking to get one

For an everyday laptop, you might want to step up to one of the CULV i5/i7 11.6-12.1 in laptops from Acer or Asus. Zacate and Atom are pretty low end pieces, both trounced in CPU, if not graphics, by even the CULV i3. I guess it depends on how much you want to do light gaming.

Only get Intel Atom netbooks if they're under $250. More than that and they don't make a lot of sense. The AMD C-50 is more than 50% faster than the Intel Atom N450 and the Radeon HD 6310 is more than 10x faster than the GMA 3150, which doesn't even have HD support apart from MPEG-2 720p. On daily usage it'll be a dog if you have more than three normal apps open.

Atom dual-core + Ion, still not worth it. Atom is just unresponsive in general.

If you have $300 to spend, go for an AMD C-50 netbook. If you have $400, go for an AMD E-350 ultra-portable.

get up at 7am and buy it for $250 at target this sunday (and get a $50 target card with it to boot, so really $200)

u got the acer ao722 for $200 (with the discount)? that's a mad good price...i am seeing it for 379 on amazon and i visited target in the potamac mall in washington and really didnt see that deal. i am going to look around some more and seee....please tell me how it is working out in terms of performance.
