If one is serious about eye candy and hi-res gaming I think one would be doing themselves an injustice to get a 256mb card these days... so just get TWO of them for SLI ;)
I personally am waiting to see more specs and availability at more places (newegg) and ATI's cards before serious consideration, but not looking too bad for initial release prices...

Don't some of the companies like eVGA sometimes go beyond the reference design and add more memory?

8600 GT xxx looks like the most solid buy right now - likely the core will hit GTS speeds. I would think that a 1.6ghz memory speed would be good for some AA/AF @ 1280*1024.

looking at the anandtech once over of the cards (8600gts and gt) i'm gonna hold off - granted i'm working with a 7900gto oc'd to gtx speeds but even going to a 8800gts isn't worth it for me - just yet

i wanna see what amd/ati comes out with but i've been with nvidia for a little while now and they've treated me fairly well

by the looks of the once over - new games that are using shaders and are not texture based are where these gpu's shine - only time will tell

Have to love those GTO's :D

*I also think the MSI GTS is another good value up there if you really have been waiting for DX10. I wonder how well these cards do in SLI? I haven't seen that in a review yet...

For $239 AR and free shipping, the PNY 8800GTS 320 seems a better bang for the buck, then any 8600GTS offering. 50%-100% better performance.

PNY 8800GTS 320Mb 229 A/R +free ship @ buy.com

I do not know how the 8800GTS compares to the 8600GTS with fan noise.

And I guess the power supply requirements are greater for the 8800GTS then the 8600GTS.

But for those wanting good graphics, and with a decent power supply, the 8800GTS seems great.

"For the 8800GTS, NVIDIA recommends a power supply that gives 28Amps on the 12V rails, shared amongst all the computer's equipment."

But on user wrote, "One 18amp line with no lockups, no slowdowns, no anything. The reccomended specs are overkill to say the least."

I have no idea what that means, but I pass it along.

That last 8600GTS is pretty expensive isn't it? I think that the 8800GTS 320MB is in that range.

It'll be more interesting for that guy a couple months down the road :p

A friend of mine tried it and his system has been running fine since the 8800GTS came out. He also ran a 7800GT off of a small 300 watt power supply for about a year, so IDK what this could mean.

actually, those would be the 8400 and 8300's. from what i read they'll be available only to oem's for that exact purpose.

Better than a X1950 pro?

Performance-wise? Not likely. But feature-wise, well, it does support DX10. :D

and less power needed

I think this is imporant point to make because not all of us have the PSU capable of running a x1950pro, which apparently can be very power hungry.
