In societal terms, should the handshake be eliminated?

Your hands do all the work. Especially with the geeks here.
They spread germs.
If you removed this social custom it would be to the benefit of mankind.

We shook hands back before TP was invented and the most common way to "clean" yourself was the 5 finger wipe. I doubt the handshake ever goes out of style.

Yes I agree totally, however, not quite for the same reasons. I have extremely clammy hands, always. So, it would benefit myself and the person I'm shaking hands with to not do it at all!

Yes. You should go on a cross-country crusade to get a Federal law passed abolishing handshakes.

I totally agree with the elimination of the handshake. From now on, whenever two people meet, they should grab each others asses instead of shaking hands. Much more social and "friendly". And on the topic of germs, dont ever step out of the house since the air contains germs. Make sure you wear a containment suit also

I like the handshake. Think it gives good feedback. Nothing worse than a limp wrister. I don't try to break someone's hand, but I give it a good squeeze and pull.

Then I go and wash my hands.

Like the others have said, if you eliminate the handshake for sanitary reasons, where do you stop? There are plenty of other more unsanitary things out there.

I could give a rat's ass about germs I just don't like to do it :). I never initiate a shake but I will go through with it if somebody else does just to keep up appearances.

no, but people that don't wash their hands after going to the bathroom should recieve electric shocks on their way out the door. i'm sure they could rig a sensor system to do this:)

don't forget that handshake is the only way to judge how soft a woman hands are.
If her hands are soft.......

Boredom in globalstud's quarters must be reaching never before seen heights. :)

Once we are done with this issue, I propose we discuss the abolishment of whistling since it is often used as a tool to express one's fondness for a specimen of the opposite sex, which is of course sexual harrassment.

I would like to follow up that discussion with a proposal to federally control the length of pet fur.

;)

spain has the double kiss. Central america is normally just one cheek. Isn't the mouth the dirtiest part of the human body, we gonna get rid of kissing too?

I sure hope not. It's the only touching contact we males are still allowed to have in the US and UK to show appreciation and well meet. In every other cluture hugging of your male friends/ business partners is the norm. It's just one of those things where we think your a i love you if you do it here.

As far as germs, that's why god gave you an immue system. Use it or loose it.
