In search of the perfect mouse.

I am looking for a relatively simple mouse yet need help due to certain requirements. I am currently using a failing Microsoft Explorer 1.1 corded optical mouse. Things I really like about it that I would like in a new mouse:

1. notched scroll wheel (very important)
2. 5 buttons (or more)
3. lack of tilt wheel (willing to compromise on this one)

I would like to try a wireless mouse, but none seem to fit the above mold. If I had to I'd go with another wired mouse.

Mice I have looked at MX510, MX1000, G7, G9, MS Habu, MS 5000.

If it comes down to it I may just get a replacement Microsoft Explorer 1.1 Mouse.

Any thoughts?

Does the Habu:
-have a notched scroll wheel?
-are the DPI buttons customizable to other programs?

If it satisfies the above issues it sounds like a potential winner. I still would like to try something wireless though. I've been using corded for a long time and it would be good to try something with more "freedom."

The logitech MX610 looks promising. Does anyone know if scroll wheel is notched? If so this may be a winner! I like how the IM/email buttons can be changed and how it uses batteries that can be replaced.

It has the notched scroll wheel and all the buttons on the mouse can be remapped from the drivers.

I currently have th G5 and the Mx 1000.

Unless you are having problems with your hands getting sore from using mice, i'd recommend the G7. The G5 is the corded version of the G7 basically, it's a damn good mouse with several useful features such as weight adjustment, many buttons, on the fly mouse sensitivity adjustment, precision movement, as well as durable. My friend has the G7 and has put it through much more rigorous usage then i have without any problems.

The MX 1000 is more ergonomic, but has some issues with its blue tooth wireless that is rather random in nature. There is also as newer version out called the Natural 6000 which is THE most comfortable mouse i've ever tried, but you don't need this unless you have issues with your hand getting sore from using the mouse.

My only major concerns with the G7 are the propritary battery packs that don't seem to last very long according to reviews and the lack of a "forward" button. Other than that it seems like a very solid mouse.

By 'notched', do you mean tactile scrolling or the texture of the wheel?

If you're going corded, the MX518 actually performs better than the G5. If you are using a normal surface, the G5 is inferior in every way.

Wireless... G7 is probably the best you can find.

By notched I mean that if you turn the wheel, it's turning not smooth and has a notched resistance. The actual surface of the wheel having a texture or notching would be a plus as well.

The G5 is a smooth surface for the wheel, and it has that notched "feel" when rotating it.

The G9's wheel can be swithched between notched and free-spin (and IMO free-spin is much better for everything except for switching weapons in FPS games). It has plenty of buttons too. It's wheel does tilt, but the the tilting motion is very small, with no audible click or anything, so if you unassign those buttons you probably wouldn't even notice it.

The MX Revolution has most of the same caracteristics (and is wireless), but perhaps the tilting action is different. Just out of curiosity, why do you not want tilt? And why don't you want free-spin wheel? IMO it's the biggest leap in "mouse technology" since optical.

g7 is the best. can't beat the comfort level. recharable batteries (2 of them) notched scrool wheel + tilt but i never use it. sensitivity change. works on any surface except Razer Exactmat (control side)

Best I have used so far is the MX1000 Original (not bluetooth). Only place you can find them now though is on ebay far as I know. Logitech only makes them in bluetooth version now wich I doubt is any good although I havent tried one yet.

Revised (7 button) G5 is about the next best thing I have used. Havent tried a G7 or G9 yet. The G9 is getting some good reviews but I see MaximumPC just gave it a lowly 6. Something about it being made more for people who hold it and use their fingertips ala Fata!ty wise.

I've got a MX Revolution. Its plagued with lags that I think has to do with the fact of its usb device. Some people feel it has more to do with its software. They may be right I dont know. I've used both the v3.2 and new v4 software and there was no improvement at all. I switched to the newer G5 because I couldnt stand the lag. I havent tried the new G9 yet. I'm not one to hold a mouse with finger tips so I probably wouldnt find it comfortable.

If you can find a original MX1000 grab it. I believe its the best wireless Logitech mouse made. Otherwise I'd suggest the new G5 if you like palming the mouse or go for the G9 if you like to hold and use your fingertips.

The MX518 performs better than the G5/G7 in all cases unless you're tracking on glass or some equivalent.

I purchased a MS Habu. If I don't like it, I'll next go straight to the "new" Logitech G5.
Thanks to all for the excellent advice.

The Habu came in the mail today! It is much better than I expected.

Things I like:
Larger butt of mouse like the Intellimouse explorer
Solid build
Tactile yet inaudible click while scrolling
Presence of Forward and Back buttons
The position of the Forward and Back buttons can be adjusted
Two sensitivity buttons
It's color is black

Things I don't like:
haven't found any yet!

Make sure to update the drivers and firmware from the Razer support site. It'll make a world of difference.
