In search of peace & quiet....'serenity now'......

In the never ending search to make my pc quiet, I'm now on a mission to try to quiet down my CPU heatsink & fan. I'm currently using a Thermaltake Volcano 6 Cu+. Any suggestions on what other heatsink & fan combo I could use which cools well (I'm using an AMD Athlon XP 1800) and likes to keep a low profile concerning noise?

I just changed my PSU to the 'Silencer' and so far so good. I believe thier claim of 21dB because it's definitely quiet compared to my last Antec PSU. I also changed all the case fans to the Panaflo L1A's as other fine members of this board suggested and couldn't be happier with those. Now if only I could do something about this heatsink & fan?...

puba, i have been on the same quest and finally settled on the alpha pal8045 with an enermax adjustable speed 80mm fan on it. i really like the adjustable speed fan 'cause i can pick just the write combo of noise/temps. with this in my antec1040 case, 2 l1a's intake, 2 l1a's outtake, and an enermax "whisper" psu i get cpu temps of 41-42 idle, up to 46 with load. i have an xp 1800 as well. the sound isn't quite as quiet as i'd like (the enermax is kind of loud, & my ti200 has a noisy little fan) but pretty good and great temps. any ambient sound (music, tv, talking, whatever) drowns out the fan noise.

good luck!

try the optional nidec stealth fan.

27cfm 21dB sure looks like a good combo for noise/performance.

Its only a buck more from the panaflo rated at 24cfm 21dB.

This is almost my setup exactly. I'm using the same HSU/Fan combo in an Antec 1030 case with one L1A Intake and two L1A Exhausts with an Enermax 350W PSU. The most noise that it makes now is the airflow through the PSU. One of these days I'll likely remove the inside fan on the PSU, but for now I'm dealing with a slight hum. I've got this on an Athlon XP 1600+ & my idle temps are 24C ambient and 38C core. I could likely get the core temp down with a little better application of Arctic Silver, but I haven't gotten ambitious enough yet.

There are PLENTY of quiet 60mm fans! - the problem is that they don`t throw much air out, 4000 / 4500RPM is the bare minumum to cool a modern Athlon system even with a copper heatsink so you`re talking whine city that`s why I bought an AX-7 - runs at even cooler temps with a 3000RPM 80mm on, even with FAST 80MM fans the whine is lower in pitch so less irritating ..

Rather like a big 5-litre V8`s sound at 100 BHP output compared to a turbocharged 1.6 litre one at the same output 😀

Heh... yeah, I'm using a 24v panaflo running at 12v. DEAD quiet and enough airflow to cool my pIII 866, and combined with two two panaflo L1A'a (one sucks, one for the PSU blows) I couldn't be happier 🙂

[edit] of course, if you're running a CPU that actually has some speed, my setup may not work 😉
