In search of good racing game for LAN parties

I'm just getting back into gaming after taking about a year off and am very surprised to see that racing games seem to be drifing towards simulation and away from the "party game" style. The two big ones I saw on IGN were NFS UG2 and Colin McRae Rally 2005, both more into the cars and the realism and less into the "Hey you ass you just shot my wheel off!" I'm hoping I've missed something. We'd like a game in the style of Insane or Midnight Club II - where in addition to racing for checkpoints you can attack other players, get powerups, etc. Is there anything new out there or coming out anytime soon?

We'd stick with what we've got but we're ready for something new... It's a shame Midnight Club III won't be coming to PC 🙁

Mario Kart is always fun for the "party game" style.

I dislike boring racing games where all you do is... drive around the course. I like items to keep things interesting.

But you want a PC title?

Definitely wanting to stick to the PC. Consoles just can't scale to accomedate a LAN party. FlatOut looks like just what I had in mind, thanks a lot for the lead!!

I hadn't heard of Flat Out before this thread. The reviews I read said it could be a sleeper hit, but doesn't come out in the States until early 2005. I've definately give the demo a try.
