In retrospect, Return of the Jedi was awesome

pics?
I've always had a negative memory of this film due to the Ewoks but this weekend I watched the original 1983 theatrical release and, wow, it was awesome. Yes, the Ewoks were annoying but compared to just about anything in Episodes 1 - 3 they were actually palatable.

Best parts

- Luke vs Vader
- The Emperor (what a prick!)
- Jabba
- Assault on the Death Star II
- No cheesy CG or CG characters!

I saw it in theaters on opening day, and it was a great experience. Not only was the movie long awaited and awesome, but the audience was really into cheering for the good guys.

Yep, move the battle from Endor to Kashyyk and you would have a shining beacon of theatrical perfection.

yeah if he had went with kashyyk (like he first planned) it would have been far better. the one bad part were the ewoks. the rest of the film was great.

But then I couldn't have had my Endor speeder bike that I got after it came out! That and my giant Millennium Falcon were two of the coolest toys evar!

Although according to the books Kashyyk has giant trees, so maybe he could have thrown them in still. OK, I agree Endor sucked.

I think the Luke/Vader/Emporer moments are the best sequences in that franchise. It's why I preferred jedi over the others for so long. I still think Empire is a much better flick, but Jedi is what I remember the most from childhood.

I really liked it too. Yeah the Ewoks weren't great, but they didn't SUCK like Jim-Jam Bonks did.

i loved them Ewoks as a kid. 🙁

...and here I thought you were posting in this thread to share pictures of your wife in Lei outfit. 🙁🙁

:sneaky:

Why all the Ewok haters? Atleast they fit the role of an alien species that were good. What was it, the overly-cute factor? They used simple tools to defeat the tech savvy bad guys? What is it? Just as the settings for all 3 movies were drastically different, I thought hte Ewoks were also different in a good way.

It's not like they are friggin' jar jar.

Like I said in the OP, in retrospect they are alright. They are definitely the worst aspect of the 4 - 6, but compared to Jar Jar stepping in poo they are actually not so bad.

You forgot:

The Sarlacc, or as I like to call it, Lindsay Lohan...

I can still remember the thunderous applause and cheering when Vader chucked the Emperor down the Death Star's reactor shaft. Man, that was a cool time. The early 80s had so many kickass movies.

I love the Yub Nub song!

"Yub nub, eee chop yub nub" :awe:

The real tragedy was how he ruined Jabba's band and songs in the special edition. In the original release, you had 3 members (Sy Snootles, Max Rebo, and Droppy McCool) singing a rock song, and then he decided to de-emphasize them and add all sorts of goofy and ridiculous characters and awful music.

I guess it was foreshadowing for how terrible Phantom Menace was going to be.

I always fast forward past that scene. The changes made in Episodes IV and V were subtle but they went overboard with RotJ. One thing that particularly bothered me was replacing Sebastian Shaw with Hayden Christensen at the end. That's just a giant middle finger to the guy, and the poor fellow has been dead for 16 years to boot. This is a guy who acted for the Royal Shakespeare Company. Chistensen can't act his way out of a paper bag.

That being said, the space battle is still one of my favourite sci-fi moments. Rivals a lot of today's CGI for realism. Not bad for a bunch of models. I still love this movie despite it's flaws.

I agree, ROTJ's changes were downright offensive in some cases. Lucas RUINED the Jabba scene and even though many thought the original Ewok celebration song was goofy, it had its place (though the new one isn't terrible TBH).

I agree 100%, and I also think the puppet Yoda in Empire is the best looking Yoda of the entire series.

After Jar-jar wasn't killed in the first scene he appeared in, you knew we where never going to have movies like the original 3.

That was lucas's biggest disservice to humanity, waiting to long to produce the final 3 movies. Could you imagine how epic starwars would be if they cut out all the CGI crap and came up with a storyline for 1->3 that was, you know, actually good?

I'll be somewhat impressed if he makes "special editions" of the prequels which removes all fart and poop jokes (don't get me wrong, fart and poop jokes are GREAT, just not in Star Wars!) and deletes most of Jar Jar's scenes. If he added a gruesome death scene for Jar Jar, even better!
