In retrospect, is the 9700 PRO the best card ever?

I'm not trying to start probs, in any way shape or form, but I have 3 cards here, wifes sytem,=ti4600, My rig, =FX5900, and my cruncher for D2OL, which is where I opted to put my Radeon 9800 Pro due to their drivers. Nuff said.

Maybe without the pompous nuff said remark it might actually appear like you aren't trying to start anything.

I think the best will be probably be the next one. The belief that the next up will be better has me always looking forward to the coming stuff.

Rumor has it that Ati will not have the PS3.0 since dynamic branching is likely not implemented in the pixel shader.
So, probably Nv stands a chance here. If only they don't fvck it up and able to utilize it...

The Voodoo cards were the best, even the V2s were only incremental upgrades to them. Those cards revolutionized 3D gaming. All the cards that followed only built on the groundwork that that 3Dfx laid down.

Which is why we all still use glide and cards have more TMU's than pipes, right?

Umm, no. It is the reason why you have 3d graphics, Direct3D, and plenty of FPS in games though.

Where would 3D gaming graphics be RIGHT NOW if not for 3Dfx and the pioneering they did for us back in the dark ages. Try to look past your most recent investment, this isn't about what is the best card out in the past 2 years...

I think the 9700Pro, while a nice card, is not anything more than an incremental advance in videocards.

The Voodoo2 was the first card that really made me giddy. I remember getting Q2 running over 40 FPS with my beautiful 8mb V2. 😀 And FINALLY being able to play Unreal. Glide ruled!

The Voodoo5 and Geforce2 also represented significant advancements. The V5 had the FSAA IQ that still hasn't been matched in newer cards and the GF2 was just a huge speed increase with framerates skyrocketing.

I just went from a GF4-ti4600 to an ATI 9800Pro and both cards are very good but they are no leap like the Voodoo2 was.... at least for me. 🙂

3d graphics will be in just about the same place, maybe a couple months behind, if 3dfx didn't do it, the whole scene would have been started with a chip from any of the other 10 or so chip makers back then.

Maybe, maybe not. 3dfx gets kudos for ensuring we would be where we currently are.
