Hello Anandtech forum members. I have a very frustrating computer problem.

It basically breaks down like this....

No matter what I do my new computer build will freeze randomly at the most random moments. (all of them are a hard freeze requiring a reboot of the computer)

Here is the condensed version of the situations I have experience freezing. (please note this is a new system I built myself)

1. While freshly installing windows vista ultimate 64-bit,I was at the point of choosing my system user icon picture...

2. Scrolling through the STEAM game catalog, using the client not firefox/IE. (www.steampowered.com)...and while downloading my games from the steam client.

3. More than 3 times while browsing using firefox/IE

4. Afraid of it somehow being a virus/Trojan/etc. I tried performing a scan using Bitdefender 2009 Total protection software...and it froze twice while doing a "Deep System Scan"

5. While playing Crysis. FEAR. STALKER.

6. Once while looking at the screen of Diskeeper 2008 Pro Premier commercial disk de-fragmenting software. (diskeeper.com)


This has been repeating since the very start of the completion of my new system.


BEFORE I post information about my hardware I would like to point out that besides my computer freezing at the installation portion I have also experienced freezing before any hardware driver installation of my computents...literally minutes about a fresh install. Only happened once. (yes I freshly installed my OS countless times) as well as experiencing freezing with the newest drivers.
With that out of the way...



Here is my hardware.

OS: WINDOWS VISTA SP1 With all the critical and recommended updates.

Case: Thermaltake Armor+MX Midtower

CPU: 45nm Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 at 3.16GHZ (Multiplier:9.5 Core Voltage:1.192 Stepping:E0)

Motherboard: XFX nforce 790i Ultra with P07 Bios (currently the latest) (also used versions PO3 and PO6) (those 3 are the only BIOS downloads at their official site)

Memory: Patriot DDR3 10600 4GB (2x2) 1333MHz (voltage:1.5, Timings: 9-9-9-24) Model Number: PDC34G1333ELK

Graphics Card: NVIDIA BFG GTX280 OC using the latest NVIDIA drivers as of this writting. (Ver.177.41)

Audio Card: PCIe Soundblaster X-Fi Titanium FATAL1ty Pro Series Using the latest drivers (2.17.4)

Power Supply: Thermaltake Toughpower 750W (Modular)

HDD: SEAGATE 500GB 16MB SATA (ST3500641AS-RK)

Please any help will be appreciated.

EDIT: Accidentally posted my Vcore as 1.92 instead of 1.192
 
First of all take everything back to stock. The main issue i see is your Cvore is WAY too high. You shouldn't go over 1.45 on the Vcore. You could be damaging the CPU. So take everything back to stock and make sure you don't continue to have problems.
 
well take everything to stock anyway. The restarts are likely due to an unstable OC. Bumping the Vcore to 1.25 may help to stabalize it.

kk will increase the vcore slightly up to ur specified voltage to see if it still causes this freezing.
 
The freezing is a common indication os unstability and a slight bump in the Vcore can ussually remady the problem. If the problems continue then you'll have to play around with the RAm timings.

OMG...it worked.. Thank you so much mpilchfamily =D...
(was going to reply a lot sooner but wanted to give it some cpu stress testing throughout today just to make sure) =)
 
It is freezing again...it only lasted 12 hours...and I tried to set the voltage safely higher within the limits and carefully watching my temperature as well as lowering the voltage a little bit below 1.25...freezing randomly occurs...I set my RAM timiings at T1 and T2 and still nothing. =(
