In preparation for shutting down SETI@home Classic (in about 1 month, hopefully)...

Latest news from SETI@home for BOINC:

March 17, 2005
In preparation for shutting down SETI@home Classic (in about 1 month, hopefully) we're trying to make sure that SETI@home Classic accounts are linked to the proper SETI@home/BOINC account. This is a bit complicated because of email address changes. See our current transition plan.

We have cleaned up our account database, merging accounts with conflicting email addresses. This may cause some users to get 'Invalid or missing account key' messages. This is easy to fix; instructions are here.
March 16, 2005
We have updated the SETI@home/BOINC database with current information from SETI@home Classic.

FINALLY some kind of proposed drop date for this project. its about time there is some communication between the staff and the members in regards to the end of classic!

To be announced (1 April 2005 or later)

We turn off the data server for Classic. Classic will no longer send workunits or accept results. Functions to update account information are disabled. We update the BOINC account database with current information from SETI@home Classic one final time. At this point the Classic statistics are frozen (though we may continue to eliminate 'cheaters').

I am going to really enjoy the final "tossing out the door" of the cheaters. It will be a most interesting thing to watch. :|

 To the Seti Admins ... "Kick their ass and follow through!"

I bet it will fun for them to to shred the cheaters up.

Much deserved fun after so much hard work and an incredibly successful project :wine:

Who wants to bet they announce it on that date...and then say "April Fool"? 😉

I was about to post on this subject. Wonder how that will affect rankings in the Top 1000. Should be interesting! WOOT!

Those of us who have honestly crunched for all of these years should be rewarded with some form of "payback". If nothing else a "Hall of Shame" page where all the cheaters are listed, a stats page basically with the cheaters names and how much they cheated & maybe the place in the real stats that they lost due to cheating.
This wouldn't be too hard to do but I don't think they are going to have the spare db programming time to do that. At the very least getting them out will be nice. 😉

With luck the Rebel Alliance will make it into the top 200 when this happens

Please end! lol I only have a few SETI classic crunchers left and I want to move those to FaD!

Smoke - I pray they put one final smackdown on the cheaters! Not only that, list them and their team on the main page for all to see....total public humiliation would be grand. My God, cheating at a distributed computing project? How freaking moronic is that?

Well since this was my first DC project and because it's so easy to setup with so many helpfull utilities like SETIQueue, I'm really gonna be sad to see it move on. 🙁

I hope the cheaters are gonna get what they deserve!😀

Hmm, I'm not sure I like that about not accepting results. There will be plenty out there for a while after they stop supplying. I think they should allow them to trickle in for maybe a month.

lol😀

I don't think listing the teams the cheaters were on is a good idea ,chances are that most of the cheaters were/are doing it behind the teams back!
Remember Cobra!:| ,I don't think a whole team should be tarred with the same brush

Hear, hear! ,I hope they can't sit down for a week after their kicking😉

I'm also going to miss SETIQ,it's been a godsend for S@H & I love its great stats as well as proxy Q'ing ability ,I hope that an equivalent turns up for S@H2.

Kamper
Agreed ,there transisiton website is somewhat contradictory about this ,but it looks like the stopping of new WUs comes before they stop accepting results.
It would make sense to keep the doors open after they've sent out the last new WUs anyway 😉

Btw folks ,I wouldn't take April 1st as being the actual cut off date😛

Hmmm, does mean TaBoo's gonna have to put its foot down to get Migroo to 10k though😉

[edit]
I went to activate my BOINC account & it said my email add didnt exist!,great:roll:
And yes I had it longer before they copied the accounts over

The wording on the transfer-page have changed multiple times last week, and one of these could be interpreted as the cut-off will be "a few days" after turning off splitters...

So, wouldn't expect they'll wait 4 weeks from sending out the last wu till shutting down.

As for reporting cheaters teams, reportedly TLC was trying for some time to remove a cheater from their team, but as long as he was actively crunching a founder could apparently not remove him... Anyway, this user was at last locked-out from the team by seti@home-staff, but this example shows it's often not a problem with a team one or more of the users is cheaters so wouldn't recommend to list the team.

the KEY word here was proposed ... meaning that it most likely will slip again ... but maybe not 2 years down the road ...

Very unlikely, they're just switching to BOINC. 😛

SETI@home "classic" on the other hand is another matter.

I'm gonna switch to the boinc project when classic is all said and done.

I figure I'll just keep crunching till the end.

I do have a couple of questions obout the boinc project though.
For some reason my account wasn't transfered and I had to start a new account, which wasn't a problem. Well that wasn't really a question 😀

If anyone here has set boinc up on a home network could they give me some help on how to do it? I have 2 pc's I'd like to have crunching/boincing when classic stops.😕

Thanks to all of you for all the help I've gotten since joining the team.

Doesn't look like they ever answered your question Freewolf but they do have our total WU's showing now.

Guess that explains the inability to upload WUs in the last few days.

Wow...never thought I'd see it end. I was hoping to hit my 6-year anniversary in May. I'll just miss it.

SETI@Home, you've been a great endeavor!
