Got an influx of Spanish customers?

Hire a Spanish dude.

It ain't that hard.

So you would willfully discriminate against blacks, asians, and whites because your customer base is hispanic.

So you would have no problem with blacks, asians, and whites doing the same thing correct?

Only racism when he says it is racism.

First, Spanish is a language; blacks, asians [sic] and whites are not. Second, there are plenty of blacks, Asians, and whites who speak Spanish. Big fail trying to play the racism card.

how is he racist?

He's so racist that he married a Hispanic.

But once again liberal SJWs have to play the victim card.

As if there aren't racist minorities. I've met plenty of people from Dominican Republic that absolutely detest Haitians because of their skin color and consider themselves white. Never mind the fact that plenty of them are as dark or darker than I am nearly matching some of the Haitian people. This is in St Thomas, USVI.

In West New York, NJ with all the Hispanic folks, the lighter people sometimes consider themselves white too. I was even marked as white when I went to the clinic here.

Some of you have no clue, but I guess you believe George Zimmerman can't be a racist cause he's part Peruvian.

Point, grunt, get ice cream. It isn't that hard. I speak almost no spanish yet manage to get most excellent food using the point-grunt method at the myriad of Mexican roach coaches and holes-in-wall where no one speaks english.

I just came back from an area where many did not speak English well, did I get upset at that, did I demand that they speak to me in English? no I did exactly this...point, grunt and muddle through.

Its his business, if he wants people in his shop to speak to customers in English then I don't see what the issue is.

The solution to this is to promote a trusted bilingual employee to a supervisor position.
That is YOUR solution, not THE solution. If you have a business, I salute you for living by such lofty principles that you are willing to not know what your employees are saying to your customers. Most actual business owners are more pragmatic.

This is something I often saw with the blacks guys who grew up with me, and I never undrestood it. If one is not a near-albino, why buy into a belief system that dooms you to lose?

I don't think he is racist or stupid (not really enough info to make a conclusion). I think he is trying to make a political statement.

I have owned small business. It really sucks having someone who comes in and does not speak English. Of course we would hire a multi language speaker if we could. Never liked turning away money.

Hmm...I worked at a hardware store once. Hispanic Mother would come in, 12 year old son would do his best to translate, I say best because not everything is a direct translation. I always had mad respect for both, I guess it's one thing when you come to America and you try to learn a language (much like me trying to learn another language and epic fail), but you have insisted on or taught your child another language.

My suggestion was entirely pragmatic. By promoting a trusted bilingual employee, I would be able to know what my employees were saying to my customers, because that employee would tell me. Once again, bilingualism is a skillset. Serving your customers is simply good business practice.

So why should we accept that Spanish, unlike all the other languages spoken by immigrants to America, should be protected and encouraged to endure?

Being bilingual is a blessing in an individual and a curse in a nation. It establishes that some citizens are fundamentally unlike the others.

I dont think it is a matter of accepting Spanish. It is a matter of accommodating customers.

Anyways that said I agree with K1052 below your post. It takes a generation for immigrants to embrace\learn the language. I brought up it not being 1916 because my grandma grew up on a farm in Waconia MN in the 1910s-1920s. They spoke German in the house. But her and her siblings learned English. To her death she could speak both fluent. My dad doesnt know any German. Same for the rest of my Grandparents. They all grew up speaking German\Polish. But their children all spoke English. Same will happen with these people.

A funny story that ties into this. In college we went on Spring break with a bunch of people from another university. One of the guys had parents from Mexico, but he was born in ND. When we went down to Mexico the bartenders let him serve drinks and spoke to him in Spanish. He just nodded and smiled. Then told me he had no idea what they were saying. Because he only knew English. He was a second generation born in the United States.

People need to stop crapping themselves over language differences. This country has always had language differences. It is part of being a melting pot. This is nothing new.

I don't see a thing wrong with making his establishment an English only zone. It is his business it is his prerogative.

Something to remember

Naturalization Eligibility Requirements
Before an individual applies for naturalization, he or she must meet a few requirements. Depending on the individual’s situation, there are different requirements that may apply. General requirements for naturalization are below.

Be at least 18 years old at the time of filing Form N-400, Application for Naturalization.

Be a permanent resident (have a “Green Card”) for at least 5 years.

Show that you have lived for at least 3 months in the state or USCIS district where you apply.

Demonstrate continuous residence in the United States for at least 5 years immediately preceding the date of filing Form N-400.

Show that you have been physically present in the United States for at least 30 months out of the 5 years immediately preceding the date of filing Form N-400.

Be able to read, write, and speak basic English.

Have a basic understanding of U.S. history and government (civics).

Be a person of good moral character.

Demonstrate an attachment to the principles and ideals of the U.S. Constitution.

If you have chosen the U.S. as your home you should be planning to become a citizen and by law basic English is a requirement for citizenship. I see nothing discriminatory in that.

I was planning on posting this but was super busy this weekend. Gald somebody did it.

For what it's worth, Leon's has been in business for 70 years and is NOT going to go anywhere any time soon. The place is a Milwaukee summertime (and even wintertime) staple and is PACKED all the time. Ironically, it is located in a once predominantly Polish neighborhood -- which now has a large Latino population.

The protests, the call for a boycott... stupid. This will be a non-issue by next weekend. Weather is supposed to be gorgeous here this week and I predict cars lined up around the block to get some butter pecan custard (gah... now I want to go!)
