Im looking to build computer that will run photoshop good and run run my kids games my last one is 10 years old with really no good parts except mouse and keyboard. i would like to kept it under 1000 unless a little more would make a big difference. i need it now with no preference on brand ive never overclocked my systems and dont really care to. the better the resolution is preferable i have window 7 pro so i dont need that.

Please answer the questions in the sticky at the top of this sub-section.

Also what version of Photoshop? Which games do they play/want to play? Do you need a monitor included in the $1k?

Well I suppose you answered most of the questions, however the resolution is not a question of what the system is capable of, but rather what your monitor/tv or whatever you're using to display on is capable of.

Also D3 and Minecraft can run on some pretty simple hardware, how serious are you about the Photoshop work, is it a hobby, past-time, or something you do at an enthusiast/professional level?

its mostly a hobby my old computer was so slow at it i dreded any time i had to use it for anything. those 2 games were what would work on my old machine at the lowest settings as they get older they want more games just we could not play them.

So just to clarify, this system is primarily aimed towards gaming and you'll just be running PS on the side yes?

CPU: i3 2120 $125
Motherboard: Biostar B75MU3+ $60
RAM: G.SKILL Value 8 GB $40
PSU: NZXT Hale82 650W $51 AR AP
Video Card: XFX Core Edition HD 7850 $210 AR
Monitor: Acer 21.5" LCD $120
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracude 1.5TB $80 AP
Solid State Drive: Crucial M4 128 GB $110
Case: Thermaltake V3 Black Edition $45
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit $100

(not sure if you're taxed by NE, might be able to get some components cheaper elsewhere but for convenience purposes all links through Newegg)
Subtotal: $1,025 - $19 in Promo codes (one of those expires in a few hours) - $50 MIR = ~$960 total for the system.

Aside from paying more? Not especially, no. An i5 might be better for some games, but for most current titles the i3 2120 is powerful enough to not cause many issues. A K series i5 would be wasted on this motherboard however due to no ability to overclock, but aside from that any of them should be fine.

I overdid it a little on the PSU, but it's a quality unit that may be one of the re-usable components later on down the line, and for the price it really isn't bad.

What mother board would you get if i went with i5? my thinking on this is spend a little more today on these two items then i can upgrade the rest later when needed for games in the future is that good reasoning or am i waisting my money. the last computer i built was 10 years ago hoping i can do the same with this one

I think you'll be satisfied with the i3 set-up as it is, especially considering what you're upgrading from.

However if you want to go for an i5 set-up, I'd get the ASRock Z75 Pro3 probably, along with an i5 3450 or so. It would be a step-up from the i3 system but I don't think you'd notice a huge difference for the things you have in mind (not now anyways). Also as socket 1155 has reached the end of its life this year, best off just with the i3 + B75 motherboard and waiting to upgrade till after Haswell comes out next year or so.

OP stated that Win7 Pro was in hand. That gives some wiggle room. For longevity, bumping to a slightly larger screen with same res might be a consideration, but a CPU increase is now feasible, or save the cash toward a GPU upgrade down the road.

So that makes it a $1000 build without the OS but including a monitor. Since you do photo editing - even if it's just a hobby - I'd recommend an IPS panel.

CPU Intel i5-3570 $200 after promo
Mobo Asrock B75M $65
RAM G.Skill Ripjaws 1x8GB $39 after promo (leaves a slot open for a future upgrade)
GPU MSI GTX 560 Ti $190 ($170 AR)
SSD Samsung 830 128GB $90 with SlickDeals promo (grab it now)
HDD Seagate ST1000DM003 $85
PSU Seasonic M12II 520W $60
Case Antec One $50
Monitor Dell U2312HM $250

= $1029 ($1009 AR)

If you could splash another $20 on Asrock Z75 Pro3 (full ATX, 4 DIMM slots, internal USB 3.0 headers, overclocking [in this case turbo multiplier]) and another on $34 on a hyperthreaded Xeon E3-1230 V2 $234 (~i7-3770 performance) that'd be nice. The Xeon is officially supported on both boards.

 Nice find on the SSD!

If you still haven't ordered just yet corey, I'd suggest this MSI Twin Frozr 7850 in place of the XFX one I suggested earlier.

Also seems you won't be able to get that Samsung 830 since they ran out, the Crucial M4 for $110 is still a decent price however.

Actually it's a bit strange we never brought up MC but Alxht has a good point, that's what lead me to upgrading my rig from my trust ol' Q6600.
