In need of assistance with peculiar problem.

Hi 🙂

Well, I am in need of some assistance/help, because i have frankly no idea what to do at the moment. 1½ week ago I assembled a new computer consisting of the following hardware:

Evga nForce680i Rev A2
C2D E6400
2x512mb OCZ Pc-7200 memory
Gainward 8800GTS
OCZ Powerstream 510w
2x200GB WD HDD's

To begin with it works like it's supposed to, but after 5 days something goes wrong. I turn the computer on, but the monitor doesn't receive a signal, and the motherboard "diagnostic thingy" reads "25". Consulting the manual I can see that it is wither related to the memory or to the graphics card. I try another set of memory (OCZ pc6400 2x1024mb) , but no luck. Okay I then go on to test the graphics card in another pc, with the same result as before - No signal. I think well maybe the card's broken, so off to RMA it goes. So Since I need the PC fast, I get a new 8800GTX from xfx and I happily plug it in, thinking all my problems are solved, and for a moment they seemed to be. I start the computer, and it seems to be working. I enter the Bios to make sure everythings okay and I save and exit the Bios, and it reboots. This was unfortunately as far as it got, because the same problem as before has returned. The motherboard once more gives me "25" (Shadow system/Vbios). I have tried clearing CMOS, but with no results.

The cpu is watercooled, but it shouldn't be related to the issue. Everything else seems to be in order...so what the heck is the problem then? The PSU (all three indicators are green), the motherboard, or something completely different. Just remember I can't even check the bios, because I get no screen at all 🙁

I will be keeping an eye on this thread, so ask if something seems unclear.

When one component goes bad, it can take another with it. In this case, the motherboard. You may or may not have damaged the new graphics card, you won't know until you replace the motherboard.

But, before RMAing anything, make certain that the power supply is good and properly connected.

Some thoughts on what it might be.

1. Is your Heatsink installed properly, facing the right way? I had a simular problem and it was basicly the Heatsink touching what it shouldn't.

2. Are you using thermal paste? This can Drasticly change temps even with a water cooler.

3. While it is probibly not this, but check the ram voltages and see if they are correct. Sometimes the MoBo does not assign the right one.

4. Do you have enough Power? Last I checked, a 8800 required at least a 600W powersupply, You may have some rail problems.

Mostly though it sounds as if it is a heat issue it could be power. Can you start the computer after a while? are all the fans working? Does anything show up on the monitor?

Hope that this is somewhat usefull.

Hi

Thanks for the quick responses 🙂

I have just tried the 8800GTX in a friends computer and it seems to be working fine, so luckily it doesn't seem to be damaged in any way. I just received confirmation that the 8800GTS is indeed dead, so I think you were right seekermeister that the problem is in fact a faulty motherboard which then took the 8800GTS with it. I have once more checked everything is properly set up, at least the stuff I can with the motherboard, and there seems to be no indication of an installation flaw (poor connections, overheating etc..), but one thing is for sure, I won't put the 8800GTX back in that board. I will be buying an asus board instead, and i'll post the results, since someone might find it helpful later on :=)

I have an OCZ 550W with my PC and it is fine
4400+
2gb ram
8800gts
2 SATA HD's

i would say 450 would be low end able to run an 8800GTS... 500 atleast for 8800gtx
