In need of an external HD

So I've been doing research on external HDDs and a lot of them are getting really crappy reviews from dying very fast.

I'm willing to spend about $150 tops on a 2gb drive, what do you guys reccommend?

My choice is an external case with USB and eSATA interface into which I insert the bare HDD of my choice. I think you mean a 2 TB drive - 2 GB will fit on a DVD. 🙂

Go to the local wal-mart and get either a Seagate or western digital.

Western digital makes some passport drives that do not require an extra power source, those are the ones my wife and I have been buying.

Seagate makes some larger drives that require extra power, my wife has 1 of those and I have 2. None of the drives have given us any problems.

Your probably going to have the same failure rate as an internal drive - its the same hardware in internal and external drives, just one is in an enclosure.

Yes, I did mean 2TB haha.

I do love the passports, but they are 2x the price, I don't think I can find a 2TB passport type drive for $150

My guess as to why they get rated so lowly?
People are retards.
"I'll plug it in, then move it around while its on!"
"I'll throw it in my bookbag without properly shutting it down, it's portable!"
I've owned multiple external drives from most companies that make them and the only time one died was when my daughter tripped on the cord and it fell onto the floor while powered on.
Every other one works still (or until I sold them off.)

Go figure..i've owned 3 in the past and they all worked for years..just thought maybe they became unstable or something..

Thanks!

Will the HDD be stationary or mobile (i.e. 2.5" vs 3.5")?
How are you connecting it (USB 2.0, USB 3.0, SATA 1.5Gbps, SATA 3.0Gbps, FW400, FW800)?

Ya. WD I know for certain uses regular desktop drives in their enclosures. People must use these things to play baseball or something.

My biggest problem with the non-portable external is the need for the power plug. That makes things a hassle in my home with my laptop. That's the biggest reason I'd like a passport type HD.
