In need of a new video card

Here is my current system:

AMD Sempron 64 2800+ @ 2.2GHz
Biostar TForce 6100-754
Corsair Value Select 1GB
nVIDIA GeForce 6100
Fortron AX400-PN

I am looking to buy a new video card for some of the new games that are coming out (Oblivion in particular) and I have my eye on the 7800GT since there are arou nd $250 right now. Is this the best choice in that price rang? Will I be CPU limited? Will prices drop even more soon or will there be something better out?

CPU limited (2.2ghz) --------- probably a little, overclock your sempron a little more

I can get it to 2.3GHz, but it isn't completely stable.

Well the new nvidia cards are coming out soon(7900gt and 7900gtx) so expect prices to go down. The 7900gt is rumored to be faster then a 7800gtx and cost $300, so I would expect the 7800gt/gtx prices to go downnnn

You are probably CPU limited at the 6800U or x850 line, I would wait till the second week of march and then purchase a 7800GT as they are probably cheaper.

Would you guys recommend getting the 7900GT when it comed out for $300 or just buy the 7800GT? Since you said I am CPU limited at the 6800U line should I just go with a 6800GS?

Definitly not the 7900GT, it'd be overkill for your system. The 6800GS is a nice card, but if you're willing to go for a second hand card then there'll be a fair few 7800GTs hitting the market in a few weeks...

I would wait and purchase a 7800GT after a week or two the 7900 series comes out, prices will be cheap and you will be able to run higher AF+AA with the 7800 over the 6800GS.

Thanks for the help guys. I will likely buy the 7800GT. However, can anybody give an estimation as to what the 7800GT will cost after the newer cards are released? There has got to be rumors floating around.

Don't forget the x850xt. For some reason they're under $200 on newegg.
