In memory of HawkeyeNJ

Good work by esquared (5 posts earlier) to find the off topic comments made by HawkeyeNJ. Best evidence yet that Hawkeye and Cashman are not the same person. (Two sisters vs. one and the mention of Chemotherapy)

Even before reading that post, I was beginning to feel that these are two different people. After reading more about Cashman, it didn't seem to fit that he was a person that would be so interested in posting Hot Deals. I live in northern NJ and the geography clues aren't matching up either. There were two different posts which indicated Hawkeye lived in Ramsey, NJ while Cashman was from North Bergen/West New York (these towns are next to each other).

It would be nice if the mods could at least confirm that the first and last name registered is or is not William Cashman. I have a feeling quite a few people are spending time on this, when this basic question can be answered easily. I am not asking the mods to disclose the name if it is not Cashman, but in the event (unlikely IMO) that it is Cashman, we can stop trying to figure this out, and find some comfort in the fact that one of the Flight93 heroes was a beloved member of our community. If it is not Cashman, we will miss Hawkeye just the same, only we will never know as much about him, as we have learned about Cashman.

OK - somebody must have bought a Radeon AIW back in the day. I just realize that I bought mine on eBay. Could someone who bought one check the paypal history? How about checking his FS/FT history.

Somebody had to make a paypal based deal with him at some point in time.

Didn't he used to trade on fatwallet? There may be more info in that profile. What was his nick?

I was under the impression that it was established that Wayne Cashman was HawkeyeNJ's name.
But now it looks like that may or may not be true.
For some assinine reason the original messages about this from a year ago was deleted.

Oh well, hopefully it wasn't HawkeyeNJ, only the moderators will know for sure.

RIP HawkeyeNJ...I hope this issue will finally be resolved and we can be all sure that he is indeed no longer with us.

I will never forget him for the all the countless Hot deals he has posted. His circulars for BB, CC, CrapUSA, Staples, OD and the other stores posted at Idealwiz were 2 or 3 weeks in advance. Now I have to buy my Sunday papers just to keep up with the deals.

RIP HawkeyeNJ...you are gone but will always be remembered and never will be forgotten.

The AT forum member that was selling all the ATI video cards was Hawk, not Hawkeye or HawkeyeNJ. I bought a total of four (4) cards from him. I paid for the video cards by cashiers check, but I do recall "Hawk" as living in New Mexico - El Paso if memory serves me correctly - *NOT* New Jersey....

I'll check my paypal history.

OK Mods, How about it?

Can't you let us know what's up?

If Hawkeye provided a real name, could you check it against the missing list and let us know?

You don't have to provide details, just yea or nay.

Has anyone sent this story to any of the news outlets? I'm sure they would be interested and could most likely help us out.

I remember always knowing that all the upcoming weeks adds would always be posted, and done in such a easy way for all of us to read. HawkeyeNJ went way out of his way to help all of us save a few bucks here and there. He walked me through several deals via pm when I was just starting out my deal hunting. He would answer simple questions over and over again for all the newbies and never received anything back from us really. He really should have been hired on as a fulltime deal finder.

Has anyone seen the movie "Eddie and the Cruisers"???? My money's on that theory.

I believe HawkeyeNJ was involved in the famous Battle of Hamburger Hill, on May 13, 1969. The details of that battle match his account in this thread. (Do a Google search for some of the specifics in his story, like "Rakkasan, Delta, 1969")

I didn't find a list of names of those involved in that incident yet, but it might be interesting if someone does.

His last post was 8/31/01. It is possible that he went to New York that week to visit someone or just say there until his flight. William Cashman was on Flight 93, which was overtaken by passangers. I believe HawkeyeNJ, being a war hero, knows that anyone hi-jacking a plane can only do one thing, crash it, if he is indeed William Cashman, he was the brave one to plan to overtake the hi-jackers and save thousands of people from what could have been another plane into the pentagon. I remember he loved his family, so it is possible he could have been visiting them.

RIP HawkeyeNJ, you will be missed.

This is true. He was part of that battle. That thread triggered the fact that he and I had a few pm's exchanged as we confirmed that my father-in-law and him "chewed the same dirt" there. It's been so many years for my father-in-law, but I can show him some of the pics and see if he "remembers" the face.

Erm...wha?

Sorry, completely wrong. Actually, up until, oh, last September, Hijacking leading to crashing was about unheard of. Rather, hijackers had tended to fly to some out-of-the-way country, hold some hostages, and exchange them for prisoners. I do know a plane out of Egypt was taken over and crashed into the Mediterranian in the late 90s (anyone have any more one this, I can't remember the details), but otherwise there was no precidence for what happened. In fact, that lack of precidence was one reason things went as well (or poorly, depending on who's doing the judging) as they did. Remember, it wasn't until the passengers of Flight 93 had heard, from friends and family via cell phone, that other planes had become weapons that they made the actions that they did.

Anyway, nitpick over. Also note that, from now on, you will never (probably) see a hijacking of the old kind again, for obvious reasons.

I think I may have found something that could definitely lead to confirming HawkeyeNJ's true identity. Compare what HawkeyeNJ wrote in May 2001:

HawkeyeNJ:
"In remembrance to my fellow Rakassans from Delta Company who fell on May 1969. In the battle for Hill 937. In deepest remembrance for co-pilot 1st Lt. Jerry T. Lee and rest of the crew of "Dustoff 927"; from the 326th ("Eagle Dustoff")Medical Battalion. Who during their attempt to save us took a SAM hit. Their chopper hit the ground and the crew was trapped in the twisted aluminum and bent steel. Minutes later the wreck exploded in a horrific conflagration. They were burned alive in that chopper. I will never forget those crys of horror. A twenty-one salute to them and my fellow Rakassans. Before my moment of silence."

To the results of this Google Search

Note -- the google link to a vietnam article appears to be broken. If we can find that article, we might find the answer! But based only on the google description, HawkeyeNJ may very well have been Gerald Torba! Searching the 911 Victim's List did NOT, however, show a Torba.

People die all the time, he may have just had a heart attack or something? But who knows. We remember all the victims and pray that such events would only serve to strengthen us all in some way. God Bless.

I will continue to investigate on behalf of the forum.

UPDATE: HawkeyeNJ was part of the 187th airborne infantry, 3rd batallion. Their story, and the COMPLETE article from Google can be found HERE.

It looks like Torba was one of the survivors who came to rescue HawkeyeNJ and the other men fighting with him.

Gordo, I could be wrong, but it sounds to me like Gerald M. Torba was flying the chopper which Hawkeye was talking about going down.
