See, but I'm for child abuse.
Me too but my kid...not so much.

Wife did this this year for herself, her parents and brother. They were all tickled. Suits me because I'm going to take the charitable contribution, saved on additional Christmas presents and she was going to give the $$ anyway.

I'd be pissed because when I want to donate something, I want to be anonymous.

i thought about that, but the irs would probably just count the gift as income and the donation as deductible. In any case, i've never even been told how much has been given. It's possible (likely) that they just gave a single gift to the charity and sent out lots of cards. That's why i put disingenuous in the op.

aaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!! Gifts are NOT income to the recipient!!!!!! Why do i have to constantly remind everyone of this???????

gaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!! WRONG.

Fine, so its 13k per donee per calendar year. 709 doesn't get involved unless you give anyone over 13k. There are other things to consider, but that is pretty much it. In the end, it isn't the problem of the guy getting the card anyway.

and here I thought it was odd what my friends gave me: 2 bobbleheads and a voucher to a hockey game

which didnt cost them anything, really, because they are season ticket holders and get that stuff for nothing. at least yours (allegedly) spent some extra money.

Wouldn't bug me as long as they knew me well enough to make a donation to a cause that I really support such as Planned Parenthood.

I remembered that after I posted, but I still think the IRS wouldn't let you deduct the gift from your own income... am I wrong?

CPA would know but what's the difference. I give you $$ and you send it to the charity. Deduction.

My situation is that I have the receipts and the visa bill so I'm taking it.:sneaky:
