Actually it very much is if it follows the reference cooler. So unless you have some kind of special edition (tm) you're wrong.

Even worse is that multiple reviewers are saying it spins up when playing HD content and definitely distracts from the movie experience.

This is why hard numbers are much better than "sounds quiet" and why doing noise "comparisons" are a waste of time.

but then you are the 'noise princess' of ATF
Better that than being the haiku queen of ATF. :p

Both Sapphire and VT evidently used the reference cooler for my x1950p - yet the VT was much better made [imo] and quieter

the x850xt/7800gsOC/x1950p are louder at max revs than my VisionTek HD2900xt ... that is all i can reference to in the cards that i have owned in the last 6 months

and what i hear right now is "all gpu" ... i have no CPU fan ... just a side case fan and the 2900xt ... not the slightest bit annoying

i think it is irresponsible to say that r600 is louder than g80 ... it *depends* on the Partners specific cooling choices and probably the quality of the fan itself

and i though i already posted an answer to this
-damn 4x6 ... probably in my FS/T thread

================
I can re-run anything to see if the 4 meg cache makes a difference, I have an E6600 that I can run at whatever speed Keys benches at.
that would be very good ... and maybe someone else will want to try variations on Key's rig .. it's all good

apoppin and keysplayr2003 thanks for doing this review and test! Must take a lot of your time that you don't even have to do if you decided not to.

Hope you all enjoy your new systems!

Biased review.

Lemme repeat that: A BIASED REVIEW

Edit: Done. Thanks for the spelling lesson.

Ummm. Do you not want this review to happen? Or am I really not understanding what the problem is. Because, calling a review "biased" before it even happens, well, kinda introduces a new level of stupidity we really don't see around here all that often. Let me know if I'm wrong and I owe you an apology. ;)

Of course we want this review - i think most people are worried that you're both not testing on the same OS (vista vs xp); i don't care i just want a review which i can give feedback about afterwards and the reviewers will listen to me (hopefully).

that and the cpu speeds (DS3 is a good board - my E6400 runs nice at 8x400 24/7 no probs).

So bring on the results.

PS. apoppin mate, has AMD/ATI brought out the "adaptive edge detect CFAA mode" yet (I read it in the Eric Demers interview - apparently its good), if so could you put up some screenshots or test that mode

thanx

If I had the money I would buy two identical systems (Gigabyte DS3 - E6600 - 2GB 800MHz RAM w/ Vista) and then put the cards in. I just don't see how this is going to add up in the end.

Either way, I like user posted benchmarks so I'm not complaining. :)

Have fun!

8800 GTS 640 is on XP, with a 2.13 ghz processor, E6xx series (along with double the cache memory and 266mhz higher bus speed)

CAN YOU SAY BIAST REVIEW?!!
holy crap
biased?
we are trying to level it out ... i have no problem with 2.43Ghz ... even withOUT a CPU cooling fan ... the Thermalright is THAT efficient.

i also can OC the hell outta my FSB and memory bus ... remember i have DDR2-PC8500 ... the *only* advantage Keys has is XP and twice the L2 cache ... and *maybe* his biggest advantage is a 640GTS ...
that is what we are trying to find out

better than HardOCP's mish-mash of skewed apples-to-bananas benchs

Pop, whats the point of incomparable test systems? Diff CPU's(caches/speed) and diff O/S...
Pointless!

Yeah, Vista to XP was a concern of mine as well. But as a lot of people are pointing out, Vista gaming performance is just about right on the money with XP right now. So, while it may still be a concern, maybe somebody here would like to contribute some time who has a similar rig to mine, but uses Vista and has the games we have.

I was this ---->| |<---- close to buying Vista today. But I couldn't ruin a good thing that I have here. My system is running flawlessly. Why would I want to even consider f-ing it up in any way. If it comes down to it, I will buy Vista for the sake of this review. I have 2 160GB SATA drives not in use at the moment and could set up a RAID-0 array like apoppin has. But lets take that road as a last resort. I don't think it will be necessary, but time will tell.

As ArchAngel pointed out, the differences in our CPU's are negligible. But, in the interest of keeping them as close as possible, apop will o/c his rig til it equals mine in a couple of platform benchamarks such as PCMark05 and maybe Sisoft Sandra. If we can get comparable results in those benches, do you think it would be ok to then go ahead and test the graphics cards? I mean, tell me why or why not. Really, we are all ears.

i dunno ... kinda like your posts ... you should feel right at home
:D

does anyone want to send me XP? with all the updates on the disk, please ... my copy is not legal ...

we can postpone this test an extra few days ... after the test, i will be glad to uninstall it and send it back so you can have your XP license back .. i won't even activate it since it is updated

i need to connect with Vista to the net first ... eventually

a quick look at the frozen scene in 3DMArk06 showed less jaggies then with my x1950p ... but there was a bit of "texture crawl"

strange ... my idea in reverse ... send me XP ... far more logical since i won't ever use it again after the tests..... AND afterwards, i can compare Vista prtfomance with XP on *my* system

I'm looking forward to this showdown. I wish I could get my hands on a HD2900XT, but I bought a laptop instead.

Maybe I'll drive up to your place and test drive it apoppin. I dont think you're too far from me.

right at the Base of the great mountains ... well, for SoCal ... 11K feet ... i am at 3K feet .. so it is IDEAL "temperate-wise" compared to the overheated low-desert ... although Palm Sping's "peak" temperature is only 10F hotter, when they are over 100F at 3 AM, we have cooled into the 70s for real nighttime sleeping .. we can grow both grapefruit and apples/cherries in the same yard. ... it used to be "cheap property" when i bought a few acres here ... no more ... just no cable or DSL ... i am waiting for broadband wireless .... which i think has just arrived a bit higher-priced than full satellite service.

Well I moved down to San Diego for school, but yahoo maps says it's only 2hrs 8min from my place to your zip code, but depending on where you live in that zip code, could take longer.

My grand parents actually live in Palm Desert, so maybe I'll make a trip out of it.

I could bring my 360 and show you what "REAL" gaming is all about. ;) Although no HSI kinda kills it since we wont be able to wreak havoc on the 12 year olds with headshots in GoW on XBL.

I'd be down to go shooting for sure though.

Apoppin, I just had a crazy Idea. You know I built 3 identical machines right? One for me, one for my brother in law and one for my best friend. I'm talking identical. Consider sending me your 2900XT for these tests. I'll ask my friend to lend me his PC. I have a laptop I can lend him in the interim. Both systems will be identical right down to the last transistor, except for the 8800GTS and your 2900XT. You still have your X1950pro? For interim use? I know it's a lot to ask, being you just got it and all. But what better way to truly test these beasts against each other when they are the ONLY variable? I dunno, just throwing it out there. I just want to make this test INARGUABLE to anyone. Tell me what you think. It's all in the interest of our fellow members here. I'll have the card back to you within a week and I'll pay for shipping and insurance both ways. Crazy idea, or crafty. You tell me...

nah i am buying it this week with iram :!

i have 4GB of DDR 1 ram with me ;)

I am thinking of getting a 2900XT ... i can get em cheap since they aren't selling well in Australia.

I WILL NOT THINK ABOUT A 8800GTX SLI EVER AGAIN !! I HAD IT AND IT WAS SHOCKING TERRIBLE WITH OLD GAMES LIKE DEUS EX !

Pellet guns ...

i used to live in La Jolla ... late 80s/early 90s - before i moved to North Shore, Oahu. San Diego is a great place to be weather-wise and very good waves ... La Jolla is mostly "reef" and not for beginners]. Back then "rush hour" was an hour. Yes, i am equidistant from LA an SD ... about 2-1/2 hours realistically ... if you are not in traffic prime time

Palm Desert is about 1/2 hour away ... and they are expecting 110+ beginning Thursday and for the next week or so

and Keys ... i don't think so ... i am eager to get onto Vista and dump Win2K [most of my aps work in the "win2k mode"] ... and i could sell my x1950p at any time ... i have been in negotiations

i have another suggestion as suggested by out resident "angel" here

You buy a HD2900xt at BB and test it in all three machines ... you have 30 days and no restocking fee ... if you really like it, you can sell your GTS. :p
... i am NOT so sure i want t buy a GTS there after i already bought a HD2900xt from them ... then return one
