Palestinian insurgents blew up the Merkava Mk-3 tank in the Gaza Strip. Three of the tank's four-member crew were killed in a landmine attack on late Thursday that destroyed the vehicle. The remaining member was lightly injured.

Military sources and analysts said the Palestinian attack marked a watershed in the insurgency war with Israel. They said the Palestinian Authority and its militia allies had been trying for more than a year to develop a mine powerful enough to destroy the Merkava. The sources said the mine contained unidentified explosives never used before in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

...An Israeli warplane attacked a Palestinian security headquarters on Friday, killing a policeman, in apparent retaliation for an attack on an Israeli tank the previous day that killed three crewmen.

Witnesses and Palestinian security officials said an Israeli F-16 jet swooped on the compound in Jabalya refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip, reducing several buildings to rubble....

 
I thought the reason this was big is that it showed it's not just some random guys who go crazy and shoot people that same day.

This must have taken a long time to plan and they needed someone smart enough to find the blueprints for the tank so that they could figure out how to destroy it...

The US probably loaned them the money to buy the planes. Or maybe they?re just some used models purchased off EBAY. 😀

Well, F-16's were propably bought from USA. Merkava is a tank designed and made in Israel. And it's one bad-ass tank! It's in top ten in Main Battle Tank rankings. if I remember correctly, it's sixth. The rankings goes as follows (if I remember correctly):

1. Leopard 2 A6 (Germany)
2. MIA2 Abrams (USA)
3. Challenger (UK)
4. (Don't remember name. Japanese tank based on Leo 2)
5. Leclerc (France)
6. Merkava (Israel)
