Alright, my friend IMed me and told me that all his jpeg's were turning into VBS extensions, I was like, omfg, get Norton and do a virus scan.

So he gets Norton Anti-virus 2001, does the live update at the end of installation, and starts the scan.

The results were that he was infected with 3 different viruses:

VBS Loveletter.AS
VBS LoveLetter.Var
W32FunLove.4099

With 3,867 infected, he was only able to repair 42, so 3,825 infected items were quarantined.

Now, that's pretty freaking amazing, but his entire mp3 collection of 2000 or so songs are infected, and I was wondering if there was ANYWAY of recovering those. NAV couldn't fix the files, so are there any other programs that might be able to do the trick?

I hate to have him delete his whole 2,000 mp3 collection.......omfg, that's so horrible. :(:(:(:( Any help would be appreciated, thanks.....

Check the virus descriptions for those found, usually there's some informations as to whether files can be recovered or not. In this case, I'm pretty sure your friend will lose his MP3s - if I recall correctly, the files are replaced by the virus scripts. You could try looking at the MP3s in notepad (or any other editor), to see if they're real MP3s or scripts.

1) This should encourage your friend to get an anti-virus package.

2) Use smarts when using E-Mail that trigger a hormone response.

3) IF he has the CDs, he should have no problem in recovering the MP3s. IF not contact the RIAA.:D

4) Always backup what you can not afford to lose.

Also try other AV software. There was a business in town here that got infected by this same virus. I was able to clean up the system and repair all 3000+ files using AVG from Grisoft. This business now paid for and uses AVG Pro on all of their systems. This was all caused from and email attachment and some foo clicking the attached file.
