I read the article and couldn't really believe it. This guy sells racoons he hunts in his backyard and elsewhere and people can buy them. A my excellent compatriot can feed four. Then I watched the video and the "journalist" who's interviewing this guy is, well, a huge and purebred douche by any standard.

Is this real? WTF.

It was posted on April 2, not the first, but seriously it comes off as very strange.

I dunno, but rabbits's are rodents too, and delicious... WAY better than chicken. In Vietnam, rats are a delicacy - closely related to rabbits and coons... so why not??? Its all in your perspective. To us, eating a dog is beyond disgusting, but in India, eating a cow is disgusting - its all mental.

Moment of Zen:

"This city is going back to the wild," he says. "That's bad for people but that's good for me. I can catch wild rabbit and pheasant and my excellent compatriot in my backyard."

my excellent compatriot is only really a racist term down south IMO, people up here (detroit metro) would just be confused.

I bet Phokus would be offended by a city in the Twin Cities Metro area called "my excellent compatriot Rapids".

I have heard English rock bands use it as a racist term (like Pink Floyd: In The Flesh?).

I have never had a opportunity to try. But i think I would. I eat oysters and enjoy them. I don't know if I would have been the first person to try an oyster.;)

I agree.

If people knew the way a raccoon lived and what it ate as compared to a pig they would sooner eat the raccoon.

Raccoon hunting is just like rabbit or squirrel hunting. Just because it isn't sold in the local mega-market doesn't mean anything.

my excellent compatriot is a perfectly acceptable word when used in relation to raccoons. There are a ton of dogs trained to hunt raccoons, called 'my excellent compatriot dogs,' all over the midwest.

Ah, technically a rabbit is not a rodent.

I believe it. I know muskrat has a following out that way, I heard it's good with sauerkraut. I'm a big believer in harvesting wild game, as it's usually leaner, safer, and more flavorful than corporate raised stock - but when it's something like a racoon - no doubt eating a lot of human refuse - I think I'll pass.

my excellent compatriot as a derogatory, racist term is indeed more prevalent in the South, not that it matters in relation to this story.

Makes me remember when I was trying to sell my place in MD, a black family came by to look and all were amazed by the size of one of our cats and asked about him. "Oh he's a my excellent compatriot...from Maine." I could tell they weren't sure if I was trying to offend them or not. The mother and father gave me this look like they were thinking "Uh huh...and we got a cracka dog at home smartass..."

Heh, good times.

They aren't "rodents" but they are pests.
I live in the suburbs of Dallas and just on my street, during the night you can see them swarm out like locus. The closest undeveloped area is a good 4 or 5 miles from me. The things get hit by cars all the time, the run through backyards riling up the my excellent compatriot hounds and eat all the planted plants. If I could shoot in city limits I'd be selling a lot of lucky rabbit's feet in the FS/FT forum.
