In cold weather, are businesses expected to de-ice sidewalks?

I was taking my cats to the vet for a checkup. I had a carrier in each hand, and was walking carefully since it is wintery here in wisconsin. As I stepped on their sidewalk, I fell and landed on one of the carriers. Needless to say the cat, already being stressed out, made noises that you would expect if it thought it was being killed (which it probably did).

So anyway, she seems to be ok. But my question is this: is it the business' duty to keep the sidewalk non-icy, or is it expected that sidewalks are slippery in the winter?

i think its just expected...but it would probably depend on city ordinances as to whether or not they're actually responsible...

Never said anything about suing. I was just wondering whether I should continue to be mad at them or should revert to being mad at myself.

Nice trolling thread crap, fausto.

Businesses typically salt icy areas for liability reasons only. Even if they do a bad job, it's hard to progve neglegence if in fact the area was being salted.

But if they don't do anything, they could get in trouble.

Sorry for spelling errors.

If you can read between the lines, I was saying you just need to be more careful. Snow and ice happens. It's nice when businesses clean up, but I wouldn't say they're obligated.

Um... yeah that's not how the internet works. If it was then I could just sling insults left and right and then say "if you can read between the lines, I was saying don't forget to vote in 2008"

in the city i used to live (Flagstaff, AZ) it was city LAW that if the sidewalks in front of your house/store/whatever were iced over then you MUST shovel and put de-icing agent on them by 9am and keep them clear until 9pm. If not you faced city fines + liability for whoever fell.

luckly they were lax on the law when it snowed more than a foot or in a blizzard.

LOL, how often did that law need to be enforced in AZ? 😉

Never mind, it does snow there, doesn't it? I need more coffee....

If people get hurt on your property as a result of negligence, you can and will be sued.

I thought this was basically universal?

Hmm....I see more wristband opportunities here.

In CT generally your responsible for clean up on sidewalks/driveways for your home/business with in reason. obviously if its snowing out and you fall its your fault. but if you fall and the walk way is still messy more than 24 hrs later the business/home owner is liable. pretty sure this is how it works anyway

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. I will continue to be mad at them. But they are good vets so I can only be mad at them in theory.

To be fair, he did say he was taking care.
