Britney Spears was taken from her home by ambulance early Thursday and escorted to a hospital by more than a dozen police officers.

The Los Angeles Times, citing unidentified authorities, said Spears was taken to UCLA Medical Center to be placed on a "mental evaluation hold."

edit: CNN says this is a 72-hr involuntary hold.

its quite sad actually, she needs some serious help, the other day i read she was put on meds for being Bipolar which i think everyone saw comming. it looks like she has some real serious mental issues, hopefully she can get treatment for them and become sorta normal

What kills me is that everyone automatically assumes that it is bipolar disorder. There are at least a half a dozen serious medical conditions that can manifest the same symptoms. Sometimes the medication (lamotrigine, for example) can be the same, but the treatment method would be different. It seems even shrinks like to stamp this label on people without ruling out something else. I hope she finds the right treatment.

I have always felt bad for her...even when she was a 17-year old celeb on top of the world. Look at her Mom. I doubt Britney has ever really felt truly loved just as she is and that's what she is searching for. It's very, very sad. Weirdly enough, I have prayed for her quite a bit.

I'm going to take the heat for this one - but I personally don't believe in simple depression. The answer for that is "Suck it up and get over yourself." But yes, there are brain chemistry issues, or physical disorders that fuck you up. Bipolar... not sure about that one, but I know my cousin died partly because of that diagnosis.

In any event, the real illness that Brit has is her mother. Her mother saw the bling when Brit was young, and the rest is history. The whole thing is probably Brit now breaking down realizing that by listening to her mother all these years has only been for her mother to profit off her. THAT isn't a mental disorder... that is simply one of many possible reactions to the situation. She finally realized that she's a human being capable of making her own choices, and now just wants to run away from it because the choices are so hard for her, and the whole world gets to watch, point and laugh.

"Suck it up and get over yourself. Clean up, sober up, move on."
