In-car theater - WTF?

Am I the only one who is mystified by the recent trend toward in-car DVD, video games, and other TV equipment? I can understand that these things might be desirable in a minivan to entertain the children on a long car trip, but I can't begin to understand why one would want this in his Prelude street racer.

Am I missing something? Do people really want to sit in their cars and play GT3? I would love to hear comments from someone who uses one of these systems.

Agreed. While I would love to have one in my XTerra to entertain passengers, it is ultimately pointless. Nothing but a penis extension.

Usually the cars with the LCD screens and playstations are showcars.

Nope you ain't the only one. I'd love to hear from somebody who uses such a system on a regular basis. I hope nobody actually drives (even on highway) and watches a movie, so other than wasting money what is the point?

On a recent road trip I was a passenger in, we had a portable DVD player (not an in car one though) using a cassette adapter to play the audio thru the car speakers.

I was scared that the driver (who could see the screen) would watch the movie rather than drive and get into an accident. Well the accident didn't happen, but he did get a speeding ticket (84 in a 65).

By brother has four kids. His Suburban is outfitted with a video screen on the back of every head rest and one on the front passenger sun visor (five, in all). He has two central DVD systems and two central PS2 systems with remote control panels and head sets at every seat, and an over ride panel between the driver and passenger seat.

This thing is a life saver on long trips. Usually when I go out to visit, we make a trip to the CA or NV desert to launch rockets, and it's great to be able to watch a movie or play a game.

5k isn't bad?

I would give my kids a book to read before I blew $5000 for mini vid equipment in my car.... I would have to be living in the damn thing to justify that kind of money....

Now on the other hand I could see $200 or less....

A playsation1 lcd is about $100 and the playstation for $50 used and bingo.... kids busy!

I have a small flat screen computer that I hacked for car use. The main things I like about it is
the ability to play non-stop music via mp3s for hours on end. I never have to fiddle with the
radio, I just set it and take off for a 10 hour trip.

I also have a GPS system running on it. This is invaluable for a trip to somewhere I have never
been before. I setup the trip before hand and the computer gives me turn by turn directions.
All the directions are spoken by the computer, so I never even have to look at it.

I rarely use my computer around town, but on long trips it is great. Someday I would like to have
a much more integrated system. Voice control is the way to go. My GPS allows this and it works great.

One thing about the computer, is that if I ever need to look at it I pull over!! Much better to have
a passenger running it.
