Imagine a couch got dropped in the middle of the freeway.. how are they going to remove the couch from the freeway when there are cars flying by at 70+mph? The cop put a break in the traffic about 5-10 miles away so a cleaning crew could quickly get in there and remove the couch. Or a car break down in the middle of the freeway and needed to be escorted to a safe place by the side of the freeway. You name it.. that's why they do it.

sometimes there is a motorcycle accident/organ donor,that needs to be scraped off the road.

A motorcyclist was killed on 787-North.
Authorities said a 26-year-old man was getting on 787 North when he ran into the cement wall on either side of the on-ramp. The incident happened around 5:30 a.m. Saturday morning.
No other information is being released at this time because the man's family has not yet been notified

Two separate accidents occurred within minutes on the Thruway.{Moron,that wrote this did not know it was "freebie"I 90,not the toll road
East Greenbush fire officials said a motorcyclist popped a wheelie and lost control of his bike after Exit 9. Ten minutes later, another accident between two cars occurred in the same location.

Thruway accidents
Two accidents occur within minutes on the Thruway.
The motorcyclist was taken by helicopter to Albany Medical Center with a possible fractured left ankle. State Police said vehicle and traffic violation charges are pending against him.
The others in the second accident refused medical treatment and were released
