In America, do kids gain more rights when they turn 13?

I'm curious as to why my Coke bottle says I am not eligible to enter their contest unless I am 13. Many other contests require to be 13 as well.

Note: I m not 13. So please don't imagine me as an annoying 13 year old next time you see me posting.

Maybe, but I don't think that contest entering is one of them. The only case I can think of is that there is some law designed to protect children under the age of 13 over the internet, which is why most forums ask you if you are over or under 13 before registration.

it was part of some digital protection law that requires parental consent for those under 13. why 13? ask congress.

I originally read the thread as "gain more weight" as well...

As far as rights, I guess they can nominally go to a PG13 movie without an adult...

Next time I'm in congress, I'll be sure to bring it up.

Internet and PG-13 movies, that's all I can think of.

why 16? why 17? why 18? why 19? why 21? why 35?

An equally good question would be - why not?

Gotta draw the line somewhere.

agreed. but considering the whole protecting the youth online thing and parents gotta sign if someone is 17 and wants to enlist, gotta be 18 to make the choice to smoke and whatnot... its kind of a funny thought when thinking of the above age choices made before the 13 year old age requirement.
