In a web hosting dillema...

Here's the deal... almost a year ago I decided to rent my own server (from ServerMatrix) and get out on my own and maybe do some local webhosting. The idea sounded great and could be a lot of extra income flowing in, but the time just wasn't/isn't there. I just don't have enough time in the day to look for companies that need webhosting amongst my school/job/gf/etc. Right now I've pretty much just been using it for a few sites that I have and also hosting a CS server for some friends of mine (for free).

So after paying for a dedicated server for my 5 or so websites that I host, I think it's time to either share the server or find a good reseller account. So here's my two options:

1. Share the server

If this idea comes to life, it's a p4 2.8, 512 ram, two 40gigs (1 currently used as backup), 1000 gigs transfer, cpanel, etc...

I would be willing to split it up some in order to help lessen the costs. It currently costs $119/month.

2. Find a good reseller account and get rid of the dedicated

I just need a little flexibilty with the account and maybe the ability to request special add-ons (a program I use needs GD installed). Also, in case in the future I do get a few local customers, the ability to resell would be nice.

Any suggestions would be cool since I haven't looked in this market for a while.

So, as much as I'd like to keep the dedicated server and keep playing with it... it's just too costly to not be having a steady income from hosted websites to be able to warrant keep paying for it. It's nice being able to have full control over the server and do whatever you want to it, but it just doesn't seem feasible right now.

1) This will work, but I'm not sure how other people will like the idea of being on a server hosting CS also. Possibly not full all the time, but it will add to load when there are.

2) Reseller account sounds like what you need, if you can drop the CS hosting of course. I assume since you are using cpanel, GD had to be added to PHP through WHM? Most host will already have that installed, and if not, can easily be added. Good luck!

In regards to #1... the CS server is only running because I had nothing to fill up the bandwidth or cpu cycles with (aka customers) so I offered to this clan as a favor. If I actually got people splitting the server or whatever, then the CS server would be turned off.

Yep I'm referring to a ServINT.net VPS which we recently moved GottaDeal.com from our HTTPme.COM resellers account to the ServINT VPS.

ServINT.net does offer DirectAdmin but you may want to stick with cPanel because it will make moving existing accounts 10x easier. We decided to make the switch to DA because cPanel sucks.

I was under the impresison you knew a thing or two about web hosting. You have never heard of ServINT? Search WHT and let me know what you come up with.

It was a tough choice choosing between ServINT, VPSColo.com and Dinix.com but in the end ServINT got my business.

You would be severely limiting yourself by going to a resellers account, a VPS is like a mini dedicated server except for it's MANAGED and $49/mo vs $119/mo. That's a no brainer to me.

I recently helped 3 other AT'ers switch make the leap to a ServINT VPS and so far they are 110% pleased with their decision. One of them contacted ServINT support on Sunday during a HOLIDAY WEEKEND (Labor Day), their request was responded to within 15 minutes and the issue resolved.

ServINT = kick ass and 100% RossMAN Approved

AN was doomed from the beginning and I blatantly told Eric (DeviousTrap) that I REFUSED to share an AN dedicated server. For the life of him he couldn't figure out why.

All I have to say is "I told ya so!"

Thanks for the replies. A year ago when I was in the market for a dedicated server I did not really look into VPS solutions much, hence the not hearing of ServInt. I was mainly looking for dedicated so I didn't even look at other hosts. Also, I haven't been back to WHT too much since I've got my SM server. I really have no complaints with them... no downtime, good speed, etc.... I just can't make myself keep paying $120/month for running a few websites.

So far I like the streamlined interface of DirectAdmin and ease of use. The "less hassle" of staying with CPanel really doesn't bother me since I only have 5 or 6 websites to transfer over.

And ServInt will keep the DirectAdmin patched up and the OS patched for bugs, etc?

Then I would definitely make the leap to DirectAdmin since you only have a few domains to transfer.

Yes ServINT will keep DA up to date with patches, security updates, etc.

Looks like I think I'll do the switch over to ServInt after I check them out a little closer. The $70 in savings a month would help out a lot.

Unless someone else says something about the server I have now, I'm going to cancel at the end of this month. If ATOT wants to use it for something for a month, let me know.

lol, Ross only thing is you took an account, you just didn't have to pay for it

And you can now safely forget about that AN fiasco. Those server were all moved to the Equinix datacenter, which in my opinion is superior to both The Planet, and ServINT.

You could try contacting eicomm and see what they have to offer. I'm running 2 websites through them and I believe they host this site.
