Say you're getting mugged or something, and you are stupid enough to start a fistfight. Is hitting the other guy in the crotch fair game or a low blow?

Does not matter. Anything goes in a fight. I would not hit someone there because you can do more damage in other places. Strike to the chin, neck, eyes, throat, knees, or diaphragm.

Groin strikes arent very good. A good fighter could just ignore the pain for one thing. If the person is drunk, on drugs, etc. they arent going to feel it.

you are getting mugged? there are no "fight rules" for defending yourself while getting mugged. i would aim for the balls if it were me.

Oh two things to think of:
1. Never start a fight, but always finish it.
2. You're in it to win it... aka not half assing it. Just like BoomerD says, 2nd place could be dead last.

Dude - if you are getting in a fight for the right reason - to protect yourself or your family, then anything goes and you are out to win at all costs.

If you get in a fight for the wrong reason (to prove you're tough or to keep your reputation), then I'm sure you would be criticized for doing it.

If you're just in a fight with someone you know, like after school, then no, stand up or wrestle him down, beat his ass or get yours beat straight up and fair.

If someone jumps on you that is trying to rob or really harm you, then do what you have to do. No rules. Pull hair, grab his junk, gouge his eyes, pull his ears off, whatever.

But once you go for the balls/eyes, they're going to go for the balls/eyes. And if you were in a position where you needed to go for the balls/eyes, your opponent is most likely going to hurt you a lot worse once he does the same.
