improper disposing of formaldehyde?

Biology teacher ordered a certain student to dispose of about 10 gallons in a ditch near my school (contimplated about disposing of it on a certain teachers car seat). Im assuming that is not very legal. It was the raw stuff, nasty crap. How badly will this affect plant life around the ditch where it was dumped and what are the proper ways to dispose of it, because i get the feeling that the EPA does not like 10 gallons of it poured out on the ground on a school campus.

I would call around a little to your local enviromental agency or fire department for disposal info.

It is illegal and unsafe to dump.

Does your campus have a Safety Coordinator?

I would recommend contacting them directly, before involving the EPA.

😀

10 GALLONS? Dude that's horrible! It'll probably kill any plants it comes in contact with. And if it gets in the food of any animals they may go blind (if they don't die also).

That would depend on how much you like your teacher

WTF?

A biology teacher recommended you just dump it in a ditch?! :Q

That pisses me off... call someone, nail them.

wtf...? Is your biology teacher stupid or something?? Geez, I hope that he at least knew that dumping 10 gallons of formaldehyde is going to kill off some plants/animals and would be potentially dangerous to any students going down into that area. Formaldehyde isn't fun stuff...I think digestion can cause some serious stomach problems and even death...inhalation screws up your respiratory tract, and I think both of those can cause blindness too...anyway, if your bio teacher didn't know that, he's a retard. If he did know it, he's even more retarded for dumping. I'd contact the EPA.

A better solution: mix it with ammonia, dehydrate it. It forms hexmethylenetetramine and hexmethylenediamine. (sp.?) Separate and nitrate the hexmethylenetetramine. = plastic explosives 🙂

And they think I didn't pay attention in organic chemistry class.

edit: note: I didn't give the amounts, nor the methods. My instructions were no better than "make a cake, mix flour, sugar, eggs, water and baking soda together." --- just in case some anti-terrorism agency is browsing my posts. But... awwww sh!t. I'm probably on their watch list now.

hell, this is the first year i have had her, no tellings how long she has been disposing of it by this method. ill wait to see if i get an A in her class before "reporting" anything

I would do it now, before the evidence is gone.

I'm sure you can do it anonymously. Contact the EPA and say that there was some abuse and some chemicals were dumped illegally.. They will probably come out and evaluate the situation very quickly.

Contact your regional EPA office---->Link

Your school is also required by OSHA to have an MSDS available for any chemical you may handle. In the MSDS there will be a section on disposal.

Ok, i got the email to the EPA filled out reads like this

I wish to remain anonymous and i do not wish to mention names because i like the specific teacher but i feel that this is a danger to the well being of the community, for i do not know if this has happened before but the parties involved have been there a while. today i witnessed about 8 to 10 gallons of formaldehyde being dumped intentionally into a ditch on my high school campus. I do not believe i like the idea of how local plant and animal life will be affected by such dumpings. I asked the teacher what it was that they were going to dump and the he/she said it was formaldehyde.

approaching from the elementary school, the specific ditch is located on the first right as you approach the campus, which is a teacher parking lot, the ditch on the left side of the road after you take the right going into the teachers parking lot. since then has probably flowed downhill.

im ready to send it but dont know if i should, if they contact the school, the teacher will know it was me that sent it, for im the only one that questioned what the chemical was and i do sorta like the teacher, even tho i absolutely can not stand her views on politics that she wont shut up about in class and we miss out on allot of stuff about biology by her discussing politics and by her bashing of democrats and other "commies"

should i risk my grade (99) in her class to possibly save a few plants and animals in the future?

advice?

If you want to wait until tomorrow I will look up what the RQ for accidental release is. I am assuming you are in EPA region 8.
