Impressive Intel Core 2 Duo performance

I built my new system last night (Specs on bottom of post) and I was VERY impressed with the performance compared to my AMD 3500+ system. The thing that impresses me the most is how long this processor can run without a CPU fan! I got my system running and I had to run to the store for a couple of hours when I came back I heard the weird beeping noise and to my surprise the CPU FAN was NOT running but the screen saver was still running. 😉 I set the alarm to go off at 70C so I know it was at least that hot. I couldn't believe it was still running like normal?!?!?! Opened up apps, surfed net!!

My question is/has there been trouble with the CPU fan header on the GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 motherboards?

Thing I am going to Try:

I also disabled the smart fan feature that automatically throttles the internal fans which I hope will help.

I might flash the bios right now I am running the F3 BIOS and the F5 official BIOS is out. I don't really need to do this tho because my system has no compatibility problems.

The last option is if it keeps shutting off is to bypass the FAn header and go directly to the PSU but this sux for monitoring the CPU fan speed.

If all else fails by a new CPU fan. I don't overclock presently so some recommendations on some quality CPUS fans would greatly be appreciated.

VIA used to use that benchmark to promote their C3 processors.

They had a Quake III machine with an Intel chip, which seemed to fry itself within seconds without a heatsink/fan.

They ran their own CPU and played Quake III for 45 minutes or something before they shut it down.

I wrote an e-mail to my brother. He used to work for Intel and worked on the Pentium 4 CPU.

Here was his reply:

Yeah... Two things, the part is rated to 90C, and ALL parts have
thermal throttling now, Intel runs with a 1/4 clock if the temp
gets too high, without that it is possible to write a program that
will burn up the process, even if the fan is running!
